How do you cope ?

My best friend of 13 years , my little Whippet who saw me through my battle with cancer meets his maker tomorrow. His big heart has failed him and I feel my own will break .
Well, i start but crying my eyes out. I don't want to be w/o any dog so I get another; not expecting a replacement since you can't do that. My current Border Collie is my 4th and each has been unique in their own.
It's hard but the right decision when that time arrives. Hang in there.

Bawl if you need to. Better to let everything out than to try to distract yourself by keeping busy. I’ve been through this and read the grief pamphlet the vet left with me. Still a difficult time but know your friend had the best possible life with you.

I have had the same feeling many times over the years. Don't know how you make it better. Only thing I can say is you know you gave them a good life and they enjoyed/loved you as much as you them.

We have been through this twice in a little over two years. It is not easy and ok to grieve, and remember the good times you had together. After losing a pet people I know have said they never wanted another dog. We felt that way once, for about a month. Totally unplanned a wonderful dog came into our life. We could not say no, and never have since then when we have lost a loved pet. The memories of your lost pets will.stay with you, and a new friend will produce much more happiness, and your heart and mind will be filled with more joy. We wish the best for you.

James Wight, better known by his pen name, James Herriot, author of All Creatures Great and Small series of books about life as a vet in rural Britain during the past century, always gave the advice that the best way to get over the grief of losing a pet was to get a new one as soon as you are able. He said that you were not dishonoring the memory of your previous pet, but starting a journey of new memories. I have always followed that advice and found it worthy. There is no shortage of dogs waiting for a forever home and the best way to honor the memory of a beloved friend is to give the same opportunity to another companion.

A great series of books. And sometimes on public TV. There is a current series on public TV usually over the winter and there was one 25 or 30 years ago too. All great.

Sorry for your loss! I fully understand how you are feeling. The wife and I just put down a pet back in July and another just three weeks ago. Both had been with us for about fifteen years. Neither passing was easy to deal with. 😞

We all grieve differently but NoDakInMN said it well with <best way to honor the memory of a beloved friend is to give the same opportunity to another companion> and if I could put a word in for the older residents of the Animal Shelters & Rescue groups - I know when the time comes I'm not going to be up for a puppy or rambunctious teenager - rather when I'm ready I'll find a young senior looking for a safe place to rest their bones. What is your whippet's name? May his big heart now rest in peace.

I cry like a baby and proud of it!

Please be with him to the very end, do not let them take him away from you. Hold him and console him.
It is hard to let go and I, we, you owe your best friend the comfort of you being with him.

I have even had the vet come out to the far corner of the parking lot vs going inside the place.
