How do you mask

Off tires so you can paint the rims

I don't usually. I take a piece of light cardboard and cut one long side to match the arc of the tire-rim. Then I hold it in place with one hand as I spray my way around with the other. Then cut a little hole in it and hang it on the wall for ten years later, LOL.

you prolly wont like it, but i dismount the tire, sandblast the rim, por15 goes on the inside, two coats, then expoxy prime and paint the exterior. for a down and dirty, let the air out and pop the bead, use cardboard cut out to cover the tire and squirt it.

You?re right I don?t like it lol . Thats definitely the best way and If these weren?t rims I cobbled together out of pieces and parts from the junk yard I?d probably take the time to do that but this tractor is just an old work horse a long long way from being pretty just trying to shoot a little paint to make everything one color

when I used to ones like that that did not have to be showroom I just rub some grease along rim on tire and spray grease rub off or wore off

A good, soft bristled brush will get the job done, and if the proper technique is used, the brush marks will be almost invisible. Smear some grease on the tires. If you get any paint on the grease, you can just wipe it off.

Clean the rubber with some varsol, let it dry and then mask it off with tape. A bit more work than grease, but cleaner.

I go over the tires with shrink wrap up to about an inch of the rim and tape the rest. If labor was involved I would probably try liquid masking. It would be sprayed on the tires and after you are done would peal off. I don't know how much labor you would save. You would have to mask off the rim to spray the tire.

Same here but only when not unmoubting which was already mentioned. It's nice to get inside especially because it seems like people really enjoyed calcium back in the day!

Same here but only when not unmoubting which was already mentioned. It's nice to get inside especially because it seems like people really enjoyed calcium back in the day!

People still "enjoy" calcium not so much in the older tractors but in the newer ones that are still working. They pump it into the tubeless tires.

I don't think I've seen but a handful of our restoration jobs without calcium in this neck of the woods. It's almost a given to find a set of rims on a lot of these.

If I were going to break a tire down to paint I would paint only the inside until the tire was back on. I've never seen a tire person put a tire on anything without tearing the paint all to H. One place I took a car tire to put a UPC sticker on the rim and I destroyed the paint trying to get it off. The paint was dry but not fully cured yet.

I use 2 inch masking tape ( make sure tire is clean so tape will stick) about 1 ft strips go completely around the rim, then take a razor go around between tire and rim, peel off inside, the use masking 6 in wide or wider paper and tape it to the masking tape on the tire! Works for me!!

Go to dollar store get about 4 packs of cheap cards and 4 rolls of the clear wrap like your wife covers food bowls with then let the air out of tire push on side wall stick card between tire & rim fold card off best you can have someone spin tire & wrap it up. Been doing it that way for years
