How does this valve work?

I recently purchased this M. The belly pump lever is unhooked. This valve has Char Lynn marked on it and is hooked to a M&W pump behind the distributer. There are 2 hoses that go to the back. Excuse my ignorance here but garden tractors (cub &100) are all I have ever used. So do both hoses provide pressure? If I hook up a 3 point hitch with 2 cylinders will both hoses be used?

In my opinion it is a 2 way Open center valve. The "IN" port is on top, the discharge to the reservoir is on the bottom. The ports on the near side attach to the cylinder (one on each end) or a hydraulic motor. Jim

I concur. I still have some old equipment that uses those old aluminum Char-Lynn valves.

The "in" port is clearly labeled, the lines to the couplers are obvious, and the "return" has to be the remaining line.

Common spool valve used to make two way hydralics. One hose is 'up',the other is 'down'.Looks like the belly pump is used as a reservoir. To use for a twin cylinder 3 point, put a tee on the end of each hose and hook each end of the tee to the same side of the cylinders. Same thing with the other hose

Looks like the tractor has a engine driven hydraulic pump. Provided enough oil and no defect all you should have to do is move the valve handle forward or back depending on what the hoses are hooked to and direction of movement wanted.

Since I can't edit now. I didn't read the question under the picture, just in the heading. So forget my other post, others have you covered. Looks like you have a 9 speed also.

Thanks to all for your help! Reading other posts on this forum I thought it might be a 9 speed cable. The previous owner didn't know what the cable was for. The cable is stuck tight! At some point I will pull off the belt pulley unit and see what it looks like inside.

Some are a little different on the parts but you probably have this. Bolt cable passes through is one of the mounting bolts for clutch housing to transmission housing. Wire in cable is anchored to shift lever on end with bolt and lock nut.

So the Formal 100 (Formal Super A) is a garden tractor? Interesting take.

The valve looks a LOT like an Auxiliary Control Valve, as sold on some Formal 100'a and Super C tractors. Basic 2-way hydraulics. Only intended for either one cylinder, or two cylinders if both are to be operated in tandem (for example, a 2 cylinder bucket lift).

You would need a different valve to run two independently controlled cylinders (i.e. a bucket with both lift and tilt).
