How hot is normal?

Just replaced the coil on a "54 NAA and noticed it"s getting very hot after about fifteen minutes. It has been converted to 12V and the replacement coil is a NAPA IC14SB (no external resister). Is it normal for coil to get to hot to touch?

A coil will in fact get pretty warm as in so warm you can not hold on to it for more the a 2nd or 2 but not so hot that if you spit on it that the spit boils off real fast

if you bought an ic14sb.. and she's on 12v.. and no resistor.. and she's running ok.. don't worry too much.

that coil disipates heat well.. much better than the old dry or hard potted coils.

newer oil potted ones are far superior
