cjm in tx

i got the 8n hot last weekend moving some tall weeds. the radiator got blocked. i cleaned it out and kept on moving. she got hot again for the same reason. question is, can you do any damage to the engine as long as there is coolant in the radiator and the coolant is circulating. after the radiator cooled, i checked to coolant level and it was still right above the core.
i know its not good to get them hot but how hot is too hot?

If you got it hot enough to make the radiator cap 'spew', and then cleaned the rad and let her cool down, and she started and ran fine after that.. you may be good to go. To be safe, at the end of every day after she has cooled off, check the rad fluid for oil byproducts to make sure the head gasket didn't go south. Also check the oil dipstick for signs of water emulsion... though if your water is staying up.. that is a good sign.

cjm, if you still had water circulating in the radiator above the core, you didn't overheat it , you only expelled the excess water in the radiator where you had overfilled it above the core. These N tractors only require water to be above the core. The tank portion above the core is just for expansion of the fluid in the radiator. Just don't overfill it in the future.

You are probably Ok , but you can definatly do some damage by overheating the motor . Hobo has a good How-To on installing a temperature gauge at his site , http://www.hobos8ns.com/

It sure would be a lot cheaper that replacing a motor if you plan on mowing a lot of tall weeds often - Ken(Ark)
