How long batterys last

Being a really nice day,I changed out the batterys in our 730 ck diesel.The old batterys dated March 2002.Not bad.Changed generator in 1978 to a one wire alt with new batterys and they lasted to 1994.that set lasted till 2002.My 1030 uses two large 12 volts and I only get about 4 years out of them.What kind of luck do you guys have?

The battery in my 930 gas lasted 12 years. I replaced it and that battery only lasted 3. My experience varies even though I normally but the same brand

I don't want to get into any arguments but for my money nothing beats Deka batteries. That being said, I had a WalMart battery last 9 years in my 87 Olds V6. For the old work tractors the swap to a alternator will greatly enhance battery life, If people would rather keep them original that's their call but a 35 amp generator is hard pressed to keep up with anything that has extra lights added.

A battery distributor told me to pick batteries in the mid range of the CCA for a given size. He thought the higher CCA in the size had plates that were really tight and more prone to shorting than to lower rated ones. So I have always chosen the mid range rating batteries and have had good luck doing so. Have no idea if this has helped because I have nothing to compare them with. Higher priced batteries should have a better track record than the lower cost, but I have no info to back that up. On my on herd of 70 series tractors I seem to get longer life on batteries since I changed them all to a one battery system instead a the original two set up. I really don?t know why. They do get moved to the starter side of tractor and are much easier to keep the battery and cables clean. This also makes in easy to move batteries to from machine to machine depending on the season and they are getting charged up more often. This also keeps my battery expense less, given the fact I buy fewer. Rod.

In my experience, if you are starting a diesel with glow plugs in cold weather a lot, and drawing down the battery on every start, you can end up with pretty short battery life.....in contrast to a gasser that starts right up. You might consider deep cycle (marine) batteries to see if you get longer life.....

When your 730 left Racine, it used 2-6V batteries in series which is a very poor set up. CASE went to 2-12V batteries in parallel with the advent of the 1030. By now, you should be using 2-12V batteries in your 730 hooked up parallel. Rod is correct in that lower amp rated batteries will last longer. Long battery life also means some maintenance once in a while, such as cleaning posts.

Here in our area, Group 30's were cheaper to buy than 31's, now 31's are cheaper. I buy Group 31's, automotive lead post, 700 CCA @ 32 degrees. I always used Exide and would get 10 years out of them. Now, our distributor is selling DEKA which have a great reputation also.

John,Next set of batterys will more than likely be two 12volts.Since the 730 ck diesel was bought new in 1966 we can't complain.My wifes first tractor that she drove was this tractor and prefers it over the 1030 or the 730 ck gas.

Locally Walmart batteries are Johnson Control. I think JC spun off its battery division and calls it Clario?


I have one Deka gen cell in a 990 going on 17 years old.

I started using battery maintainers, hopefully they will help, I have friends that swears by them.
