How many tractors do you need?

My wife asked me this question a while back when she could no longer park her car in the garage. My "obsesssion" started with my grandfathers 8n. and has expanded to 5 8n's and one each of 9n and 2n. Each has a different job, mowing, plowing, bushhog and so on. Only "Gramps" is completly restored and parade ready. The others are in running condition and various stages of resto.
So the question is how many is enough or how many you have and how many more you will buy??? Or should I follow my wifes advice and have my head examined?
 
If you can buy them reasonable, its better than money in the bank. We have around 65 Fords. They range from 2 aluminum hood 9N"s to a "93 4630.
 
It depends on how deep your pockets are. My wife's niece's boyfriend's father has 50 tractors. Gee, that's complicated isn't it? I bought my first one a couple of months ago and really enjoy the challenge of working on them and it is an inexpensive hobby IF you do all of the work yourself and pay attention to the people on this Forum and troubleshoot the proper way: step by step.

I started out the wrong way and threw parts at the tractors. Now I am trying to LISTEN to those who have more experience and go step by step. This is a great group. So how many do you need? I'd say as many as keeps you busy and makes you happy and contented. Just don't get so many you have to build another barn or the wife will really get suspicious (you can't keep a good tractor outside, that's why it rusted to begin with).
I figure I've got room to save a few more.

just build more barns........not rocket science. At my age, wife & I don't care what the other does as long as we don't have to do it with each other.

You need one tractor for every implement plus a spare. If you're not into implements, then you need about 3 tractors per acre.
 
i guess it depends on the definition of "need" if your a collecter and are trying to get all of one series or something like that you need 1 of each if your just trying to buy tractors, [ a guy in montana has over 500] you need 1 of everything, if your like most people and talking about using tractors i get by with 3, but sometimes sure could use a 4th, using, meaning these tractors work for a living and none have ever been to a show , well 1 might have been before i bought it but i really dont know
 
I've been asked the same by my wife many times about many hobbies:
"How many (insert item) do you need?"

Answer applies to vintage men's hats, old electric toasters, Model A's, wooden canoes, Lionel trains, tractors, fly poles, Jeeps, etc:

"Just one more dear."
 
It depends upon how many implements you have or intend to buy.

No one wants to swap implements, you know.

The answer is similar to the farmer who answered the question of how much land he wanted with: "Not much. Just everything that joins me."
 
Caution!!! It appears that a person can own one of these tractors just fine, do well, and not be infected with the 9N2N8N virus. But if you get two, it appears you're doomed to repeat infections and multiple treatments with spares, parts tractors, implement change avoidance tractors, and collection fevers.

Very easy to answer. I need just as many of them as I can get on my land and still be able to put up the hay. Last time I did a full count between me and my partner we have around 40-50 of them but that includes all he has on his place and my place. My place has the largest number of them but I also do all the repairs on them
 
Like dean said.. get one for each implement.. plus maybee a spare ready for the next implement.. and then maybee a backup tractor in case you have a flat or something :)

Five.
It all started with the family tractor, an 8n, rescued from Idaho and restored in Iowa. It's called Carlson, named for the Carlson family.
Next came the Farmall A, called Coigun. Purchased from a friend and the name is derived from the sale of coins and guns to finance it.
Next came the McCormick-Deering 22-36, again from the Idaho farm. Named it Cumbrous, which is a synonym for cumbersome.
Next came Carbon Copy, another McCormick-Deering 22-36, bought on eBay to get a good engine and better fenders.
Last came the John Deere A, because when you are from Iowa, you must have a green tractor. It's a 1944 A, named Clemo. Name was derived from one of the nicknames my brother has for his wife, who was also born in 1944.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Actually, tractor NEED is a very simple calculation: tractor need is determined by the greater of implements or acres owned.

Tractor SUSTAINABILITY, however, is a more complex calculation: tractor sustainability is determined by the sum of implements and acres owned.

As to questions by wives, it took me a second marriage to figure out that the key to a successful marriage is separate bathrooms & checking accounts!

The real problem here isn't that you have too many tractors. It's that She can't park Her car in the garage.

The solution is simple...build HER a garage for Her car!..problem solved, and if you build it too big for just the car you could probably put some more tractors in there too.
 
Thanks for all the reply's. I never hide them my wife just never seems to count them, but she sorta knows that there more every time she looks. She's a city girl so all she sees is whats in the yard or if the barn door or garage doors are open. If I see one at at good price and its running I take a ride and go see it. I will go by the advice one tractor per implement and a few spares for now until I run out of room.
