How Much Battery?

49 8n--- Has 12v conversion---question is how much battery is needed? In terms of CCA etc. I want plenty of starting power but I do not want to over do it, specifically in terms of price. Thanks!!

Rule-of-thumb is a minimum two CCA per CID... in other words, the smallest common car battery is theoretically overkill!

I use the std size Garden Tractor battery on mine, never had a problem.

Scott........unlike yer Belchfire-V8 with all them electronic doo-dads, amplifiers, windows, yer N-electrical system is quite straight forward and does NOT use much battery. Recommended 12V battery is size 22. The cheapest size 22, has more than enuff CCA's. Remember, most alternator systems demand NEGATIVE (-) ground 'else ya gonna' let the smoke out. You do know electrical stuff runs on smoke, don't you??? Everytime you lett the smoke OUT, it quits runnin' .........smokey Dell

Dell. I'm still running 6V, but here we see -20 oF at times, and I use the N for plowing snow.

I brought the biggest I could shoehorn , sideways into the box. 6V 875 CCA. It's about 10 years old now.

Is it better to replace a lawn mower battery every 3-4 years? or buy quality, and know it will start, even if you flood it?, at -20 oF

IMHO that is me.

Oh yes, when that nasty limb, at the edge of the field, rips a genny wire off, you can keep on cutting to 2 more hours.

That is a weak point on th N fords

IMHO that is me.

Mad the average guy around here has trouble getting much more than 2 years out of a lawnmower batt. I think the problem is most of em sit in the cold for 6 months without getting used. When I was still running garden tractors I would get about 4 years out of one but my GT's got run year around. Now living where I do I generally buy the biggest, best batteries I can find. Really hate mesing around when it's -30 with a -50 wind chill! If I have an old battery that I'm not sure of about this time of year I will pull it, make sure it's fully charge and have it load tested. If it's on something that I use over winter and it comes up short I replace it .

Living in the Great White North, the only battery to buy is the BIGGEST you can cram in the box. And take care of it! Neglect kills more batteries up here than anything else.
