How much blowby is too much?

My 560 diesel has blow by with 8000 hours . Own it 45 years .
I ve never done a leak down test on it. It gives the overall condition of engine compression leakage.
It will start in all Ohio temperatures.
I’m going to run it with schedule oil changes till correction is necessary .
If necessary I’ll borrow my friend leak down tester and test ,record data and go from there.

cant tell a thing with that 3 second jumpy video, thats not even focused on the vent. maybe tell us how much oil you are going through would be more accurate.
Sorry, I didn't really know what I'm looking at either. It doesn't really seem to use oil. I just see a lot of steam coming from what I assume is a valve cover breather.

i wouldnt say its a lot of blow by, but gauging your oil is more accurate. plus you can if you hold your hand over the breather on a worn out engine there will be compression you can feel. but lazily breathing is quite normal.

Thanks for the input.

Keeping an eye on oil usage is a good indicator because blow by is caused by worn out rings, which will allow oil up from the crankcase into the combustion chamber?

yes and compression to leak past the rings into the crankcase also. so if your out in the field working and you burn 1/2 a gal of oil in 4 hrs you need an engine rebuild.

The breather tube or hose has the orange paint on it behind the PS reservoir. I surprised that it doesn’t extend down to at least beside the oil pan like most do. The side of the engine would stay cleaner if it was extended lower. Not sure how accurate the parts diagram is but it shows it originally directed down the right side of the motor not the left. It comes down from the valve cover. Here is a link to the diagram. Messicks DB 990 part catalog Just FYI you can view all the parts break downs for your tractor from that link by selecting different Categories and Diagrams.

Smiles, you are asking if it is “worthy” of an overhaul. Only you can answer how much you want to put into the tractor and if it can be justified.

How often and how long do you run it? Is the thermostat working, does it come up to 180 degrees or higher? Running cold can lead to more condensation that gets pushed out the vent tube and will show as whitish vapor.

Give it a bath, you may have other things causing part of the mess on the engine. Extend the vent tube (don't reduce the size in doing this) so that it ends below the tractor, clear of any obstructions (moving it the right side as the parts book shows might be a good idea as well, if it makes a shorter straighter run).

Thanks everyone for the input! It definitely doesn't start as well as I'd like it to. Not sure on the thermostat, I have a new temp gauge I need to get installed.

When one of mine was doing that, I chose to rebuild it. I didn't want to keep breathing that.
I had one doing that and I connected a piece of garden hose to the bottom of the blow by tube and routed it up to the intake manifold. Drilled and tapped an NPT hole and adapted the hose to the manifold. Worked great for a lotta years. Forget what I did with the tractor eventually.

15w40, does not get used hard. I generally do not use the coke start because I only just got it broken loose
better get it warmed up under a good load for a couple hrs. why do we get important info after the fact. need to get them rings freed up. i was presuming it was a diesel. see better video would have shown that also.

Any suggestions for how to load it up? It's really just a toy for me, not a lot of hard work for it to do.
