how to check 6 volt coil

Put it in the tractor and see if you have spark. Spark should jump a 3/16" gap in a used plug grounded to the engine.

any way to check it out of the tractor was hooked in reverse for a long time (-)to points ( its a positive ground) also had a 8 volt battery gonna put in a six volt .....Chris.....

eversing polarity will not hurt it in any way and 30% greater voltage isn't like to kill it either. Now, if you just want to play & make sparks, here is a circuit with a relay connected to act as a buzzer and it will switch your coil on/off similarly to points in a distributor (although dwell/etc. is not really controlled). I built & use this to ignite a propane burner with a timer (with a few gas safety additions).

Happy sparking!
