How to properly use a brush hog

This may be a dumb question but I would like to know the proper way to use a brush hog. Is the front of the brush hog supposed to slide on the ground or should it be lifted slightly.Thanks a lot you guys have taught me a lot in the past two months since I found this web site

Joe.......front down just a bit. Why? so you only cut ONCE. You do realize, brushhoggs have adjustable rear wheels to control mowing height, don't you? I mow with stabilizer chains that set the front mowing height. and iff'n I need to LIFT my mower over BIG ROCK, the chains will collapse, and then pick-up the mowing height without me looking behind and guessin'. KEEP DOGS AND KIDS AWAY, rocks can be thrown a long way. ......HTH, Dell

lifted slightly.. I like to keep mine a couple inches off the ground.. which usually gives you a 3-6" cut on the ground depending on the design of the hog.

I like to keep the front lower than the rear.. easier to cut that way.. blades only hit the stuff once.

I bought a new Woods brush hog last year and learned a little by reading the manual. I would say that no, the front is not supposed to slide on the ground. It will wear out the bottom edge of the brush hog that way. Set the height of the mower by using the tail wheel and then by using your 3 pt. lift arms. I know some people will use "stay chains" on the lift arm so when it is lowered it "hangs" by them. If you set the front about an inch lower than the back your tractor will not have to work as hard. If the rear is lower it has to cut the grass twice. Make sure you have a rigid top link on your 3 pt. and not just a chain. Apparently the mower could hit an obstruction and flip over on you and then your dead. Be safe and good luck.

Found that out today. Last year I pulled the mower exhaust cover off of my Cub Cadet so it would not create windrows and I would not have to rake. Today it tossed a rock that shattered a window on my wife's car. Ugh. :x

Thanks guys. One more question Dell how do you connect the stableizer chains on your lift?

Joe.......stabilizer chains have "keyhole tabs" that fit the toplink under yer buttbuckett with longer 3/4"-pin. Then you just drop yer chainlink into the keyhole slot when you have the height adjusted to yer satisfaction with yer "hy-trol" hip lever control. The other end of the chain also have simple tab that fit onto the 3-point links of yer brushhogg. Effectively creating a triangle with yer turn-buckle top-link. ........Dell
