How to replace PTO gears?

I'm new to the site and need some expertise from someone who's been there-done that. I have to remove-replace the intermediate PTO gear in my WD45. And I'm a rookie. Any specific or detailed help someone can provide, or perhaps instructions and pictures to get me through this little project would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Keith

Your first step would be to get an I-T manual AC-11 which will give you most if not all that info. This site sells them by the way

I have the I-T manual AC-11. Section 193 doesn't tell me much at all that I can use. It starts off telling me to remove the torque tube, but doesn't define what the torque tube is or where it's located. See what a dummy you're trying to coach? Later, it says to remove the shaft through the hydraulic pump opening in the torque tube. I thought I was supposed to remove the torque tube??

As you might be able to tell, I need some serious coaching from someone who has done this task and remembers the shortcuts and steps. Pictures would be much appreciated. I hope someone will be able to walk me through this project as alfalfa continues to grow. Thanks, Keith

I&T is a Rosanne Barrr level joke. The original AC books are better and even they lack some useful information. Torque tube is the casting behind the bell housing. Hyd shaft is the shaft behind the clutch. Get a parts book or get on www.agcopartsbooks.com You can log on as a guest and view parts books. Exploded diagrams will help a bunch. Just start taking things apart till you hit what you need and try to remember how it goes back together.

Boy been 20 years since I did one of these. IT tells you to split the tractor. I asked a old salt AC mechanic and got some great advice some of which eludes me at the moment.


If memory serves me I dropped the PTO box and maybe the hyd pump but not sure on that. got access to whatever retained the shaft for the Int Gear. Slid it so the gear would come out and reversed for reassembly. Tractor still does it's thing 20 years later. It is doable without splitting the tractor.

Remove the pto gearbox and remove the hydraulic pump. Then there is a set screw retaining intermediate gear shaft. Then you take a punch and pliers and work the shaft into the hydraulic pump cavity. Watch the thrust washers how and where they are located. Then reassemble . If you need the parts call me at 785 966 2739 days

***** And, you'll probably need to remove the battery box and battery and then the hand clutch cover to help with that intermediate pin installation.

I?ve found I&T manuals give enough information to get a guy in trouble. For a few dollars more excellent quality factory manual reprints can be purchased from Jensales for not much more than the cost of I&T manuals.

I've not had problem using I-T manual but again one has to be able to read between the lines and know how to wrench pretty well
