How to test the generator?

I want to make sure a rebuilt 24V generator off a 4020 is working correctly before I put it back on the tractor. The shop is reputable, but I really don't enjoy putting something back together more than once or twice :)

How would I test this generator off of the tractor? I have an electric motor to spin it, so that part is easy. I have a volt meter that works well also.

I've read the voltage should be around 28V between A1 and A2, but how would I go about fielding the generator so it will generate? Putting a jumper from F to A2 did not work..

Hopefully the replies to this will help many others down the road aside from myself.

Thanks!

When you tried to test the generator did you have A1 + A2 connected to 2 12 batteries (24 volt) in series? if you did not connect and you jumped f to A1 you would have the voltage spike to 60-70 volts due to no regulation and no load. That can lead to internal arcing and permanent damage to the windings. Its not that hard to just install the genny and test it on the tractor. We have two 4020"s here that have always been 24 volts and always start for what its worth.

I totally disagree. I love my 24v system as it cranks that motor better than any 12v tractor I have. 24v systems get a bad rap as many people don't understand how they work, the maintenance on them, etc.

Ding, ding, ding. Some people always think they are smarter than the engineers. A good functioning 24v system is just as good or better then 2 12s in parallel.
