how to time a 4010 diesel engine

I have a 4010 john Deere that seems to run alright at low speeds but at high rpm s it misses severely, any advise would be helpful, but i think ill start with timing.

There is a strong chance your cam gear is worn enough to let the timing "float" a bit, this will cause a high rpm miss to happen. to time it remove the little cover near the brake pedal to expose the fly wheel, also remove the small timing window on the injector pump(2 small flat screws hold it in place),rotate the flywheel with a large screw driver till the TDC mark comes up, this mark on the pump comes up every two times the fly wheel turns. As you line the marks up with TDC and turn the engine back and forth you will see a bit of lost motion between the two marks, this is cam gear wear,by advancing the pump to where the pump lines are fairly even with the 10 degree mark on the fly wheel will help you some.

I moved the flywheel to the 14 degree mark as it said in my service manual and the marks on my pump are a good 1/4 inch off, how do i adjust this?

Loosen mounting bolts on inj pump and turn it if there's enough slot to do so in inj pump mounting flange. If not then you'll need a new camshaft,oil pump drive gear and probably timing gears.

I think that is normal for advanced timing. The flywheel showing 14* and the timing marks not lined up would be 14* advanced. Try that and see what happens. If it knocks badly or has no low end power,its advanced too far, adjust it back.

If the injection pump has been converted to "speed advance " the timing is 8* if memory serves. The flywheel should be remarked with a chisel cut.
