howard installation update

finally got the re-installation on my howard complete. come to find out one of my shafts had turned slightly causing the gears to be half a tooth off. finished putting everything back together and it is working better than I expected.

I did notice something interesting though. when the low gears are engaged the drive sprocket does not fully line up, or slide all the way back to the back plate. gear to gear engagement is just a little over 3/4 of the width of the gears. upon further inspection it appears that the replacement shaft rear of the howard could be about 1/4-3/8" shorter and it would allow the gear to go all the way back.

ot specific to Howard, but any partial gear engagement sounds to me like a recipe for disaster.

this photo is with my howard in high gear, I fail to see how the shaft would stop it from going far enough too full engage.

high fully engages. however when the drive gear sides to the rear of the tractor and onto the smaller "lower" gears is where it stops about a 1/4" away from the back plate. it is stopping when the differential shaft,the adapter shaft and the engagement shaft(don't know what else to call this other than the pto slip sleeve) all touch. don't get me wrong, it is engaging with a good bite, it just seemed awful sloppy for tolerances on the adapter shaft or It may have been designed that way so that the drive gear won't rub the back plate..

Sort of like this? Keep in mind the face width of the lay shaft gear is .500 and the face width of the shifter gear is .700 so the shifter gear is always going to protrude a bit.

that is exactly how mine is. if you look down it straight on you can see the offset on the backside of the gears as well. I was probably over analyzing it to ensure no further problems. that makes me feel a lot better about leaving alone.
