Any advice on minimum hp needed to make hay with NH 846. I read the specs but poor farmer that I am, I’m in a bind and only have my trusty MF 50. I’m on flat land and have to get up what’s down then I can work on my big tractor. Probably under ten bales unless I cut them down in size.

For only 10 bales,I'd do it. Even if you have to go in first gear, you will get it done. Or,as you said, cut em back a bit. Try it.You'd be surprised what those little tractors can do.

That sort of reminds me of what I was told years ago when I traded for a NH850 chain baler. I was told my Oliver 77 would handle it well yes sort of if I wanted a bale that was maybe 3-4 foot in diameter. Next I traded for an IH450 and it didn't do much better. Then I found an Oliver S88 and well it plays with that 850 and I can make a full size bale with no problems

It's worth a shot. Those 50s are good lugging little tractors.

Yeah, what is surprising is in 1965 they could make a tractor that 60 years later, is still routinely baling me out when my bigger, new tractor is falling apart.

Way back when many of the tractor we have where built people took pride in there work. Now days people only think about the $$ they make and how to make more but do as little as they have to, to get the $$. I have a 1935 JD B that I could make run with maybe 30 minutes work to it like clean the points

Those "minimums" are just suggestions. A lot of times a smaller tractor will do just fine. Case in point. My brother in law has a Haybuster round bale feeder. I think it is 80 min. However,he puts it on his old Farmall 300.And,turns it at 540 pto instead of the recomended 1000.That little tractor(at 8000 ft altitude) has no problems. His 806 went down and the cows had to be fed. The feeder stays on the 300 now.
