Hughesnet Gen4

Has anyone upgraded from the basic hughesnet satellite internet to the Gen4? They want us to sign up for 2 years and I haven't heard if it's any better. The basic has been getting slower and slower over time and we are considering upgrading.

Guys, I took a hard look at changing about a month ago, I was not unset with my internet provider, just curious! Called Dish, since they are my Satellite TV provider. The Tech that came out Asked me if I had any ??s before he got started. I said yes and got an ear full. First of all Dish and Hughes are the same system! Dish just runs it all! I decided to keep my old system because of Bandwidth Issues! If all you do is surf the net!, Ebay, CL, YT and the like you will get along very well! BUT! say if you listen to your local Radio, Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Mark Livin Every day, for 1 week you are out of Bandwidth! Hence you need a more costly option thus not staying for Me, in the monthly cost I am already paying. It would have been min.of $20 more /-month to have what I already have! Hope this helps!

I would not consider satellite internet at all if I could find something else besides dialup if you haven't done it yet check and see if sight to sight is available in your area, they put a small antenna on your house (not near as big as that dish) and point that at another antenna and they talk back and forth big advantage on those, no bandwidth, or that's the way it is here in DFW area TX, I don't understand why they have a limit on satellite when they don't have a limit on any of the others here, Hughesnet tells me they're required to, then why are the others not required to put you on a limit, doesn't make sense, sounds more like a way to get more money to me, and think about another thing, they start pushing Gen4 and your internet conveniently starts getting slower. Just a thought

I absolutely agree with that statement, but what are ya gonna do? We had the site to site guy out and we don't have any signal. No DSL or cable on the road. Broadband is a intermittent 3G. So I may look harder at Gen4.

Thanks for the thoughts guys,

Mike

Check to see if you have an at&t cell tower available. They are now offering internet off the cell towers in most areas.. the old towers are 7 megs, the newer ones are getting up to 48 megs of through put.. And to top it off, the price is about the same as regular land line internet. They will let you do a trial with a little box for a month and if the tower is too far away, you can return the box. In the next two years they will have most all towers upgraded, so if not now, will be very soon. This has been very popular down in in the rural areas and is growing fast.
