Hupp stuck in low range

I have a TE-A 20 Ferguson which has a Hupp addition with the transmission. While using it today hauling fire wood the Hupp unit got stuck in the low range. The lever is in the middle and not where it should be for the low range. The lever still moves but the tractor only moves in what I consider the pass through position, "right in the middle". What's the fix? Thanks, Andy
 
The official fix is to install the newer
overdrive fork, underdrive fork and shifter shaft.
not to mention the interrlock pin, screw and 3 ball bearings.
All these were available for about $18.00 in 1952 from the Hupp corporation in Chicago.
Now you can put the shift handle back into low and try to slowly and gently shift it into the neutral position using square movements of the "h" shifting pattern. Don"t try to round the corners as you bring it out of low. You might get lucky and not have to split the machine, remove the front cover and move the shifter with a screwdriver.
I have done it both ways and am about to build a 4 trans with the low range Hupp option.
 
These Hupp transmissions had tendency to stuck in low range when the shift lever was forced a bit. There was a service bulletin from Hupp many years ago which recommended a modification and parts required to correct the problem.

If you are lucky it "may be" unstuck by jacking one rear wheel just to clear the ground put shift lever in 4th (engine "not" running) have an assistant to rock the wheel back and forth while you operate the shift lever to get it out of gear as suggested in previous post.Do not force the lever it must be operated with precaution.

We still have 2 Fergies with Hupp...when the Hupp
was locked in low range it was because we forced the lever and the fork inside jumped over his slide. If the lever seems to be hard to put in low range simply release the clutch with Hupp in neutral and press it before engaging it will turn the input chaft sigtly to facilitate gear meshing in the Hupp.

As for the unstuck procedure we had sometimes success with above described operation..most of the times we had to split the tractrors to correct the situation.

Without detracting from this thread .... mind if I ask a question?

As I understand it, the Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction and the Howard Reduction both reduced forward speed whilst maintaining PTO revolutions. I.E. the PTO maintained constant revolutions regardless of whether low range was engaged or not.

The Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction and the Howard Reduction were both used in Australia with rotary hoe attachments, where normal PTO revolutions were required to drive the rotary hoe, whilst a slower forward speed (than normal 1st gear) was required.

With the Hupp transmission, is it correct it [u:e5913d1432]both[/u:e5913d1432] reduces foward speed [u:e5913d1432]and[/u:e5913d1432] PTO revolutions?

As you can see, I've had little if any experience with Ferguson reduction gears and rotary hoes!

Thanks, I was lucky and could get the Hupp back to proper operating condition by working the shift lever slowly and easily. I will now be more careful when putting in gear. Andy
 
The PTO may be operated in 3 ranges

Slower in Hupp low range (shifter right & up)
normal in Hupp normal range (shifter down)
Faster in Hupp High range (shifter up)

It may be dangerous to operate PTO equipment while
in high range... most PTO driven equipment of this era were designed for 540 RPM. Turning faster may cause imprevisible results.
