Hyd fluid level on 861

Plowing snow today and had to run an erand. Backed the tractor to the edge of the snow pile and left tractor with the blade on top of the pile. When I got back couple hours later the 3pt wouldn"t lift.
when I renoved the fill cover it looked low I thought, can anyone tell me in general how much fluid should be in there maybe using a dipstick, how many inches of fluid? The real dipstick disappeared after a stay at a neighbors place this summer and just want a ballpark idea of the fluid level to get it into the shop. Thanks for any help, Warren

Thanks John,

So in your opinion if I use something like a piece of coat hanger and make a mark on it at 5 inches, stick it down the dipstick hole, I can measure it from the top of hole where the regular dipstick seats. (this its hard to explain)

sump nominaly holds 2g for regular operation. 3g is fine. the suction tube is pretty low in the sump.

I'd think frozen water int he pickup clogging it, unless it was almost empty, and then LEAKED while you were gone.

drain the oil into a pail.

put 2g in.

mark a dipstick.

then you'll know.

so the resivoir under the screw on fill cap should contain most of the 2 gallon capasity? (some being in the various lines, passages and such) Rough measurement, there is about 4-5 inches of fluid in the reservoir.

Changing fluid this morning, thanks for the input.

The tractor sits in the barn all the time in Minnesota where it gets cold (really cold this year), I am wondering if the condensaion is the main source of moisture in the fluid.

If that is the case is there anything I can do to prevent it in the future, maybe an additive or something? Or is it just changing the fluid often.

Last time was fall of 2012. I use it probably less than 100 hours per year.

Thanks

Ok, put the tractor in the garage and heated it up, moved outside and started it up, no lift. It was warm enough, about 45 degrees, and I took out the plug on the front of the hyd pump and nothing came out, so I engaged the pto and started again and a fountain of dark gray fluid came out. Shut it off, replaced the plug and 3 pt works again.

Does that mean the "pump lost it"s prime"? Why is the fluid so gross when the fluid in the reservoir under the seat almost clear, does it come from a different place? And finally, what is the best way to flush as much of the old fluid out when I change it?

Is there a procedure somewhere that covers it?

Thanks for the patience and info

pto operation has nothing to do with the hyds.,

oil is lighter than water.. thus free water drops tot he bottom of the sump.

and yeah.. it lost prime.

i'd change the oil / water and see what ya got.

dump in a lil diesel and some 90% rubbing alcohol. let it run a bit and drive around the yard to slosh and then drain the hyds... refill.. etc.

adding a lil 90% rubbing alcohol to the sump afterwards will help control some of the free water from condensation.
