hyd/trans oil

Got a 185 in shop and replacing hyd/trans oil. Will HyTran be OK to use as I keep it on hand in bulk?

Originally they used hydraulic oil in the front compartment and gear oil like 90 wt in the rear end.And don't forget the final drives.

I have a Allis Chalmers 1943 model C and the manual calls for a sae 20W for the transmission and I was wondering if I could use a sae 20 instead ? And could I use it for the gear box as well ?
I'm not really sure what to do here but I would appreciate any help as I don't want to mess anything up.... thank you in advance for any help

You'd be fine running any of the universal hy trans oils too.

Model "185" tractors are of a time when no 80/90 wt was ever used in the transmission/differential. Only a Hy-Tran/Multi-purpose oil.

I would NOT spend the money on Hytran but would use the compatible oils that you can buy at Tractor Supply/Orchlens. The good stuff is/was about $45 a 5 gallon bucket. I wouldn't use the cheap 303 oil
that sells for $20 a bucket (price pre shortage economy) unless it strictly a hydraulic reservor - I wouldn't use it anywhere you have a wet clutch.

Bought a new AC 175 in January of 1981. After three years of use the transmission top shaft/bearing seized. I had the tractor repaired by a Case/IH dealer, who was an acquaintance of mine. He told me to use HyTran....telling me that the 'splash' lubrication system of the 175 would lubricate better with a lighter oil with better lubricity. He also 'notched' a higher oil level mark on the dipstick ..stating to use more oil in the transmission. Still use the tractor almost daily...and have had no recurring problems. I don't know if the 185 has the same type transmission... so the relevancy of my experience is perhaps questionable.

That's odd. The 175 would have had the equivalent of hytran in it from the factory. Your issue was a rare occurrence. The 175 and 185 transmissions are the same design.

That sounds like the classic "leaking PTO seal " and when the oil level gets low enough, the main shaft bearings lock up. Been there a half-dozen times in 45 years.
