I went thru the Hydra Power and put new seals in it when I had it apart. Changed the filter and added 6 quarts of ATF like the book says. Checked the oil before going on a tractor ride yesterday and it was on the add mark. I can't see any leaks anywhere and I didn't have any more ATF with me, so when we stopped for lunch, I checked it again and there was just a bit on the end of the dipstick. We stopped at a Casey's so a couple guys could get fuel, so I got a quart and spilled some but got most of it put in. Checked it this morning and it's way over full. Must be my eyes, I can't see the oil lever on the dipstick very well at all. Will it hurt it to be overfull? I painted one side of the dipstick this morning to see if that makes it easier to read, but I think I will take a piece of dowel rod the length of the dipstick and use it for checking the oil and carry it in the toolbox. Adding oil is a pain!!!!, throttle rod and choke cable is in the way, not enough room for a big enough funnel to add oil. I gotta find a funnel with a short flexible spout.
 
When I did mine I had to add a little over 6 quarts to get it on the full mark. And yes it is a Pain to add oil without a flex tranny funnel. You may want to drain some out if it is too full. By the way. tractor looks very nice. Congrats on all the hard work!
 
I never liked putting oil in it either but have to do it regularly because the banjo O-ring leaks. I us a flexible-spouted cap that fits a gallon jug, but it's still a bit messy. It's even difficult to get the dip stick out without some dripping.

Did you add the elbow to raise the rear end fluid level? There was a service bulletin on that.

Yes, it had the elbow on it when I got it. It you have the unit out of the tractor, you can replace the O ring by taking the side plate off without going any deeper into it.
 
A piece of 3/4 white PVC will fit the opening. I'm thinking a couple of 45 fittings and about a foot of pipe would make a good filler, just don't want to buy a 10' piece to make it. I need to go to Menards and see what I can come up with.

I am curious about this up date with the elbow. Is this something I should do on my 1650?

Just a cheap flex funnel is all you need Chris. That's all I use. I got mine free as a give away at a booth at a tractor show. Any auto parts store or automotive section at a big box store should have one for a few bucks. I've used those long stemmed automatic transmission funnels too, but with that angle, it takes two hands.
 
I know that, just haven't got to it. Mr. Schweibert told me it's possible without taking the engine out by removing all four engine mounting bolts and sliding it to the left. Just haven't tried it.
 
If you have a filter on the left side behind the battery box, you should be OK. That is for
the transmissions that don't have a lube pump.
 
1550 and 1650 used the same main case but the internals were entirely different. 1650 was constant mesh with forced oiling and 1550 was sliding gear and splash oiling.
Look under the left platform, you can see where the filter would have been. The I&T manual describes the elbow extension.
