Hydraulic advice sought...

I have a problem with the hydraulics on my loader (a Paulson mounted on a Ford 660). The lift cylinders are single action. Raising the loader is fine, speed is okay. The problem is when I go to lower it. You have to be VERY easy with the lever or the loader comes down in an awful hurry! I have the hose coming from the port which would normally go to the lowering end of the lift cylinders (as opposed to the raising end) plumbed directly into the return line. Is there any way to restrict the fluid flow coming back from the cylinders without affecting the flow going to them? Remember they are single acting cylinders. Any advice would sure be helpful. Thanks...

Yep, flow control valves that work only one way. they restrict the oil coming back out of the cyl. and have no restriction on the lift direction. available at Baum Hydraulic in Nebraska and many other places. From what you say, you have hoses on the down side of the cyls going to the return on the tractor. You can take them off and put vents on that end of the cyl.
The flow control valves are adjustable for rate of drop. HTH.

Thanks for the quick reply. The cylinders ae single acting and only have one bung; for extending. The hose from the valve which would normally go to the other inlet in the cylinders, if they had them, is now going straight to the return line to the reservoir. So when I go to lower the loader, the fluid just goes straight to the return line. I originally thought I'd just plug that port in the valve housing but figured I'd end up with the loader stuck up in the air and/or stall the tractor or something. Plumbing it to the return line seemed like the right thing to do. I'll have to check into those one way flow control valves. I had envisioned something like a one way check valve, only it still allowed reverse flow only slower... That must be it!

Northern Hydraulics or Northern tool whatever they call themselves this week also has them.

There are two of them just above the angle iron in this picture. They have a micrometer knob for adjusting the flow in the restricted direction. And set screws for locking it.

Took me a while to figure out how you've got it plumbed but I think I've got it now-

You have the extra line from the control valve on the tractor going back to the reservoir, whatever that may be, so the oil still flows through it, just not to the cylinders.

For the lower, depending on how the hydraulics work on that set-up, they may already have a restrictor built in. On the factory hydraulics on our Oliver's they have restrictor valves, where you adjust a screw and lock it in with a nut. I had to make that adjustment on our 1855 for a spring tooth which would chatter very badly while lowering. After the adjustment, no more problems.

If you have an external ad-on valve, your best bet would be to buy a restrictor for that line. If you have a hydraulic shop nearby they should have it on hand, in stock.

So using a flow valve like the one depicted shouldn't adversely affect the speed of raising the loader, but will (or should) slow down the fluid coming back out of the extended cylinder (assuming I hook it up and adjust it correctly)?

Yes that's right. That Prince valve includes a check valve so it flows freely one way and has a very adjustable restriction the other way.

I ran across a good deal on a Hy-Spec valve like the ones in the picture. It even has 3/8 NPT threads so it will match up perfectly (all of the ones I saw had ORB threads except this one so the guy gave me a real good deal on it). I just need to make sure in which direction the restriction works so I don't put it in backwards. I'll post how things work out but it'll be a week and a half or so before I get at it.
