Hydraulic arms will not lower

Greetings,

I have a Ford 9n tractor. I was using a box blade when all of a sudden the lift arms stopped working. They would not go up or down. I detached the box blade and as I drove to the garage, the arms raised up but will not lower. I am no expert (as you will soon figure out!) but not afraid to learn so I drained the hydraulic fluid and opened the bottom plate (shown in the attached photo) to see if there was any obvious problem. I removed all the bolts and tried to pry it off with a screwdriver. At this point the arms dropped suddenly as if something had become unstuck and I was able to manually move them up and down. Any ideas as to what happened here?

In the process, I created another problem for myself. In trying to remove this plate, I found that it is obviously still attached to something inside. With all the prying, I ended up damaging the gasket in several places. Any ideas on how to remove the plate so that I can put in a new gasket and avoid any future leaks?

I will confess that for several months I have had a leak coming from where the lift arm attaches to the tractor and I have just been catching the fluid in a bucket and pouring it back into the tractor along with all the dirt and bugs that accumulated in it. I was doing this to buy some time until I could fix the leak which I should have done a long time ago! Would the dirty fluid have anything to do with the arms locking up or failing to work properly? (And yes, I will be fixing this leak and doing a flush before I run the tractor again so that I can keep clean fluid in it!)

Well, not being sure as to whether the problem with the arms is resolved or not, do you have any other ideas as to how I can properly troubleshoot the problem with the arms not working?

Thank you for your help!

The plate you tried to remove is the hyd pump. The PTO shaft has to come out before the pump will come out. I would suggest you the FO-4 Service manual and read up on it. It is a bit heavy so take care.

CONGRATS!

that bottom plate is the bottom of the pump. t he one run by the pto.. the pto shaft goes THRU the pump!!

also.. on a 9n.. the lift control fork must be spread and removed from a T shaped control valve BEFORE the pump can drop or the top come off.

you will now have to remov ethe pto shaft ( new gasket ) and dropt he pump to clean up the old gasket.

you have better hope the screwdriver did not scratch the sealing surface.. many pump bases from then are aluminum. if so.. you will have to get creative.. perhaps allow solder and a fine file.

if the damage is at the pressure hole.. you are even more fubared.

lastly.. the reason you lost lift control may be from a sticky control valve.. or the fork camoe off.

pull the inspection cover to look.

oh.. and GET A SERVICE MAUAL for that poor tractor!!!! bfore you damage anything else 'fixing' it!

" I am no expert "

You do not need to be an expert to buy a set of manuals for a 60+ year old piece of equipment before you attempt to repair it. (tip # 39)

Even a toaster comes w/ an operating manual.

Get the manuals & post back w/ questions. Dropping the pump, cleaning it & putting it back is not that hard. You will get plenty of help here.

And the leak is coming from the lower lift pin. You will need to remove the axle trumpet to fix it. Again, w/ a set of manuals & some help here, it's not a hard job.

and be sure you disconnect the control fork before dropping pump or you will lily break control valve input "T" assembly. The reason it lowered was that you created a leak in path between cylinder and valve/pump when you dropped pump a bit.

"so I drained the hydraulic fluid and opened the
bottom plate"....." Any ideas as to what happened
here?"

Yep. You didn't read the manual. Before you hurt
yourself or damage the tractor, get the users
manual and the I&T FO4 manual. (Both available
here at YT).The bottom plate is actually the
hydraulic pump. Before you remove it, you must
disconnect the control fork and remove the PTO
shaft. Not difficult to do.

Thanks fellows for all the excellent advice, especially the pictures. This has been very helpful. Most of you suggested getting the users manual. Silly me, why did I not think of this before? Anyway, I will get that today and do some reading so that I can be a little more educated. Once again, thank you for all the help! I'll post back AFTER reading the manual if I run into any trouble.

And for your tractors sake - Please stop pouring grit and dirt into the hydraulics. Compared to new parts, new oil is cheaper.
