hydraulic control valve for loader

My 2520 has a 148 loader on it; the power for the loader comes through the only hydraulic remote on the tractor. The hydraulic valves for the loader are a cross brand...they are what I would call an "open" center valve....when you actuate the hydraulic lever for the tractor, the hydraulic pump runs all the time. I would think I need a closed center valve and am hoping to use a power beyond in the future. Is there a particular brand of valve I need to run the loader? Any preference? Or can I fix my cross to become a closed center valve?

Some of those valves had a port that you could plug of to make them "closed". You should pick up the oil supply ahead of the rockshaft and return through a ported filter bowel, the loader will work better and free-up the SCV. Northern Hydraulics offers a single stick valve that works well, but you will need to change your hoses around and make a different bracket, I have one one a 4020/158 loader, it works well.

They offer a one stick valve with two functions, they are handy to operate. fore and aft left and right.

Loader cylinders aren't difficult to rebuild if you have some mechanical skills. The cylinders have 2 snap rings,1 on outside and 1 hidden inside.

ps 1 stick control valves with 2 spools are sometimes referred to as joystick valves

Look at the valve that you currently have to see if it can be converted to closed center. To do so, remove the return fitting from the valve and look down inside at the end of the center gallery. If the center gallery has threads, then a closed center plug can be ordered and installed. (or you can use a power beyond sleeve and plug the end of the sleeve)You will need to know what kind of valve it is, Greasen, Cross, etc to know where to purchase the plug. Your plumbing will be Pressure and a Return. In closed center, the center gallery is isolated from the return galleries in the control valve. The return galleries run across each end of all the spools and then Y together at the "return" end of the valve. If open center, the center also Tees in to the return. If closed center, it is isolated with a plug and does not Tee in.

The loader control valves need to block all flow in and out over every hose when the levers are not operated.
An open center valve flows oil without restriction in, through and out of the valve body supply & return hose. When the levers are not being operated.
