Hydraulic cylinder disassembly

Hi all. Im taking a hydraulic cylinder apart on my MF Work-bull but
am having problems. Ive removed the lock nut and tapped the
bearing further into the cylinder to allow the removal of the retaining
ring. Problem is, the bearing wont go in far enough ( using a brass
punch and hammer) to allow clearance to remove the retaining ring.
It feels and sounds like Im hitting up against a solid stop but all the
oil is removed and the piston is clear. Any thoughts? Thanks, Gord

Which Loader? Which cylinder? Do you have any pictures? AGCO may have the parts breakdown on their website. They do for the 100 series.

Hi Stan, its for my MF 202 backhoe. Its the crowd cylinder on my hoe of my Massey Ferguson backhoe. The actual hoe model is 220. I do have a purchased manual and can see the drawing and instructions for disassembly but the bearing wont tap in far enough to allow the retaining ring to be removed. I can see the retaining ring but I cant get the bearing to move far enough in to get it out. Its the end cap thats leaking a bit. ( wiper seal). The entire cylinder needs to be disassembled to repair as its a welded cylinder. Ports on the sides of the cylinder are also welded. The end bearing has a lock nut and the bearing is held in place with a internal retaining ring( round split ring). Its around 68 centre of pin to centre of pin, maybe a bit more when fully extended. The Clevis pins on the cylinder ends are 1 1/2 dia. The OD of the cylinder is around 3 7/8 dia. The rod is 1 3/4 dia. The main body ( tube ) is 37 from the clevis centre to the end of cylinder body ( tube). I thought I had all the oil out but maybe not, maybe thats what its bottoming out on? Or its hitting a ridge from the piston? Or perhaps the fittings in the side of the cylinder are too far through the cylinder wall and are interfering? Thanks ,Gord

If you are trying to take it apart as seen in your picture, you may be putting the gland (bearing) in a bind because the rod is not free in the center of the cylinder due to weight it is holding. I think you may need to get the cylinder off the hoe, laid flat, and the cylinder barrel secured so you can wiggle the rod a bit as you try to tap the gland in.

The wiper seal you see on the outside is not what is leaking. The wiper is installed with the lips out to wipe dirt off the rod as the rod retracts into the barrel. Lips out is the wrong way for a seal to mount, but is right for a wiper. The packings inside the gland/bearing are what are leaking.

Yep, your right, its the packing inside thats leaking out through the
wiper seal. Ive reassembled the cylinder for the moment as I have a
couple things to do with the hoe before the black flies come this
spring. I had thought I could have it out, repaired and back in, in
maybe 1 or 2 days but I think it will be longer if I run into problems.
Its not leaking much so Ill set up a collection system for the little drip
of oil that does leak and try the repair again once I have my spring
work done and the black flies take the fun out of being outside.
Ya, it could be a simple binding problem, although I did try it standing
up and laying down. ( the cylinder I mean, not me although maybe
that would work too). I can easily move the retaining ring and get my
small screwdriver under it , I just cant get it out due to the bearing in
the way. Hopefully your right and when I try it again the bearing will
move in far enough. Thanks for your help, Ill have another look at it
in a month.
Gord.
