Hydraulic fluid level

in general, the hydraulic fluid level should be how high? What I added fluid the last time to my 9n the fluid barely touched the bottom of what I would call the gearbox underneath the service port by the floor start...I'm thinking I may need to actually add more fluid to it rather than try to fight the hydraulic system

Why not just look at the dipstick? the bottom bolt hole and dipstick on mine agree.

BlueLine.......in 1939, the 9N was designed for 5-gals of gear oil. (GL-4 hydraulic fluid today) Most 9N's did NOT have the hydraulic dipstick in the 6-in round port behind the right heel. Bottom bolt is generally considered as a correct level indicator. Fill is 3-in bolt looking round-cap by tranny shifter. (twist to release) Caution: OverFill can leak out the tranny front seal and grease yer clutch. Usually you can "burn" the clutch against a solid object and clean the oil off. Clutch is extra heavy duty and such "abuse" does NOT hurt it.

There are 2-drain holes with cotter keys to drain leaking tranny fluid. Back in the old days, most weed control was mechanical by dragging V-shaped shares just under the surface of DRY soil which obviously created DUST which would clog the tranny drain holes except fer the jingle-jangle cotter keys to clear the holes. Now days, most weed control is by chemicals.

Probably the biggest and most popular use of the N-Tractor is dragging a 5-ft brush hog. Always use an ORC (over running coupler) with brush hog otherwize the rotating inertia will push you into the corner of the barn, or fence post, or lite pole. .......HTH, Dell yer self-appointed sparkie-meister and ORC preacher

y dipstick shows the low mark when oil runs out I overfill mine for years before I learned better. That oil ended up on my brake shoes or coming out the transmission input shaft on my clutch.

(quoted from post at 14:20:09 03/08/15) So now do you still pull the bolt or just go by the dipstick? now that you know where to fill to?
just use the low mark now no need to take the bolt out just saying not all dipsticks are accurate. I put in new axle seals and new seal on input shaft when my clutch gave out. I don't have to add any oil now that I replaced those 65 year old seals.
