Can anyone tell me how much hydraulic fluid it takes to fill a 1946 Farmall M with a loader? Also what do you recommend for hydraulic fluid? Thank you.

If you have a loader on a M,Farmall,you must have auxiliary tank, the belly pump only holds 5 or 6 quarts,that's barely enough for a 3x8 cylinder, so how big is the other tank? Far as the loader, anything from Hy-Tran down to Wal-Mart hyd fluid will work!

There were about 100 different loaders available for the M, and most of them are not documented so your guess would be as good as mine.

Some of the loaders use the top side of the boom cylinders as auxiliary reservoirs to address the limited capacity of the belly pump. Some use the loader frame. Some have a separate tank (those will be obvious).

My advice, buy a 5 gallon bucket of Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid at Tractor Supply. That should be enough for most any loader and leave you some extra to top off if you have any leakage.

Run the loader as high as it will go. If it is not fully raised, you need to add more fluid to the belly pump of the tractor. Keep raising and adding until the loader goes all the way up. Then lowering the loader will push the oil into the auxiliary tank.

that would be much easier for u to figure out as u have the tank and set up there. we have no idea and not even a picture of the system.
you can use any hyd. oil you please. its just a simple system.

If the M used the same hydraulic oil as the SC and 200 it was called Lift Oil and was more like transmission or power steering fluid. I have put Hy-Trans in my 200 but the lifts, especially the front rocker arms, do not respond near as well as they did when we used the old Lift Oil from IH. They are slower. We could use the front rocker arms to shake grass and other stuff off the front gangs. It will not do that using the Hy-Trans. Some on this forum have stated that GM Dextron type transmission fluid mimics the originally Lift Oil. I need to replace the seals in both the control and the rear cylinder so I plan to change out the oil and use Dextron.
