Hydraulic hose question?

I have a Farmall H that has a hydraulic leak at the fitting. I tried to tighten the loose fitting but it is stripped, probably my fault. Anyway, the hose is about 64 inches long and I d like to replace it. I know nothing about hydraulic hose fittings so I don t know what size it is. The hose connects to a actuator to lift my bush hog. Any suggestions on where I could get a replaced hose with fittings?
Thanks for the help.

Tractor supply sells pre-sized hoses with fittings. If you have a NAPA around they will make any length hose you need with fittings.

Charlie, Thanks, I have a NAPA is town and TSC a bit farther away. I will remove the hose and take it to NAPA and let them make a new one for me :)

Not sure what exactly you have but if its a 37 degree flared fitting its called JIC (joint industry council) and has a Number Size that is the number of 16ths...so a #8 JIC is nominal 1/2" ID.

The nice thing about buying hoses made with female JIC fittings (basically its a tube nut) is that they seal tight and should put no torque on the hose itself. The JIC is a hydraulic rated fitting.

Another quirk I've found is that some have NPT (national pipe taper) fittings. These are good for less pressure.

If you google "Parker 4300 series tube fitting catalog" you will eventually come to a page with a lot of different adapters. Good reference material for trying to make new stuff or fix existing. They can be bought/orderd thru Parker Stores or also online from various sources once you find the part number(s).

There are 3 suffixes, -B (brass) -S (zinc plated steel) and -SS (304 stainless steel). The -S is a strong, economical long-lasting fitting and will do very well for use on a tractor. I have several of them in service on my tractors.

I will guess that since the hydraulic hose is in use on a Farmall H, the fittings are common, standard 1/2 NPT. That type of fitting will be more than strong enough to hold up to anything the belly hydraulic pump can dish out. The hose will be a common size carried at most any farm store.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I removed the old hose, took it to NAPA after work and they made me a new hose. NAPA said it is okay to use Teflon tape on the fittings. Any comments about Teflon tape on hydraulic fittings? I hope to put it on this coming weekend. I will let you know if its fixed.

If you use Teflon tape (and I don't recommend it) keep the tape back 1 thread from the end of the thread. Better to use some pipe dope made
for hydraulic fittings. IMO

Well to late to this party but my experiences with hydraulic hoses if standard length buy off the shelf at Fleet Farm or Tractor Supply. If you got money to burn or need a hose to specific length then have one made up. I had to replace all my 3/4" hoses on my towable air compressor. One 11" hose cost me nearly $40 from Fluid Power. Fit like a glove and real good hose. But for the rest of them I used off the shelf 1,2 and 6t' lengths. For the minimal pressures these hoses get I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars where it wasn't necessary. Same for my tractors and skid steer. But if money is not an issue have them custom made. One of my 460s I just used has a leaker slobbering up my deck, The slick oil could cause a slip or fall so I need to change that out. For what pressures I work with around my place I can get by with the off the shelf hoses. They will probably out last me. When repiping equipment I do like to put swivel ends on both ends. Makes life easier. I use teflon tape on NPT and do pay attention not to tape the end threads. Only because I don't have pipe dope and was brought up on teflon tape so it doesn't bother me. Pipe dope is easier I agree. But back in the olden days I never had a leak with Teflon tape and pipe dope I did. This was on steam lines with less than 200 lbs of steam on the pipe or boiler. Use what you like. Anybody have a good recommendation for pipe dope? I would be more than willing to try newer dope that might work better than what I tried years ago. Regards, John.

Usually hydraulic fittings and hose ends, with male pipe threads, going into a hydraulic pipe swivel don't need tape or dope as they seal on the internal seat arrangement of the two, not the threads. Pipe threads on hoses or fittings threading directly into a cylinder or other fitting with no seat would be carefully taped or coated with dope, as they seal on the threads. As noted be careful using tape, you don't want a piece getting into the system.

This is my wife riding our 1949 Farmall H, with leaky hyd hose. We have not bush hogged in a long time.

I put my new NAPA hydraulic hose on over the weekend. I did not use any Teflon Tape and it did NOT leak. My hyd pressure went from 20 psi with the leaky hose, to 40 psi with new hose (no leak).

My Farmall H is ready to use again, thanks for all the help on these forums, over the past 2 years. I don't think I could have fixed it without all this help :)
