hydraulic hoses torn up by pto

TWICE in a row! Grrr! Thursday somehow the hydraulic hose on my batwing shredder was "caught" by the pto. It tore off the male end near the tractor. The male end was still plugged in. I had a new hose end crimped on ($25).
Today (Saturday) I had the new male end on the hose, had it plugged in, and thought I was keeping it away from the pto. Yet somehow it was grabbed, and this time tore off the "housing" which the male end plugs into (at the tractor).
Help, please - how do I prevent this from happening again? I'm thinking a rope from tractor to shredder with a bungee to keep it up. Other/better ideas?

Is there a guard on the pto? That usually prevents it from grabbing anything.

My God be glad that's all it grabbed. Get that pto shield fixed.

A photo of your problem sure can help in a preventative idea. You have something not safe there.

Listen to Flying Belgium and rustred. Get too close with loose clothing...and you are done. Happened to a guy nearby when I was a kid. Horrible horrible way to go.

I struggle with the rope used to start tying round bales, turn right it's to loose and turn left it's to tight. Got to find the sweet spot. A tight rope would be a challenge. To keep hydraulic lines up I use 2 or 3' bungees wrapped around the lines midway and pulled tight to the back of the tractor as high as I can get it. I also keep a bungee across the lower links. Good luck and hopefully no more whale spouts of oil.

If there is no hose holder like in this image I would fab one, pto shields should be on also, BUT, I have had the shields rotation speed wear through rope and bungees. Your going to have to spend some time figuring out why the hose is coming in contact with the pto. Take a couple hours and put the rig through a drive around with a full range of operation without the pto on, just focusing on how the hydraulic lines may be catching or being pulled on causing contact with pto. It'll be worth the time....

I recall a fellow .... One day his hydraulic hoses that were wrapped through the back of his JD 60 seat became entangled in the PTO.....well he was very fortunate...he already had sired two children....and that was all he ever sired....

When my bat wing was new I had an issue with the center hose getting into the center rotor gearbox slip clutch. There is a hose stand near the front of the deck which holds all three hoses together and up nicely away from the front/splitter gearbox and drive train. But the problem was the center/lift hose was way too long, and it could get into the slip clutch as mentioned. I made another little holder near the center rotor gearbox, and then pulled the excess hose back through it, and around the lift cylinder and tied it off.

I can't give a definitive answer on this but wee keep them close to the tongue till we get up to the steady bearing then raise them up above the PTO shaft. The one that is the biggest issue is the 1219 mower since the tingue swings with a hydraulic cylinder if it is away when mowing it is against when in transport. though it is not turned on then I do oil the chain on the right side that drives the reel and the knife then turn it on for a second to work the oil in to the knife. I have also went to using fire hose for some implements that tillage to keep the sun off the bulk of the hose and to keep them grouped together over the hitch and out of moving parts. I have also used PVC pipe to run the hoses through on one piece since it has a long run through the top of the machine with no good place to hold the hoses. That has worked good for the last 4-5 years now.

Definitely get the guard on the shaft!, how about a pogo stick like semi’s use for their lines to their trailers to keep the hoses up, they are spring loaded and have another heavy spring holding the hoses for give

Thanks to all for the replies and advice. The pto shaft IS shielded. It has a plastic cover over it. Also the shredder has a hose holder nearly three feet tall at the front of the shredder. Yet the hydraulic hose still somehow seems to get caught. The plastic pto cover is broken/destroyed at the c v joint. I'll look to see if I can find the c v joint end of the pto plastic shield. Also think I'll try to get or make a hose holder/pogo stick. Again thanks for replies and ideas. kelly.

Maybe I'm not getting the whole point here but, If you can grab any hose and try to pull it into contact with the pto, you should see the problem with it being too long.

Either that or I'm not getting the whole point. I never heard of a to long hose being "grabbed" by the pto shaft. Wore through yes but not grabbed and being ripped out.

The right hose length helps, also a hose holder like in the picture too. I ran quick hitches, JD has the cyl holder hook, I used an irrigation gasket to run the hoses through so it had a "sag" between it and the tractor and another between the loop and the machine and a heavy rubber tarp strap at the hook if needed....James
