Hydraulic issues or am I missing something else?

WELL! Now that the electrical nightmare is over and done with, I can move on to the next item to be fixed. Maybe Im just missing something And its an easier fix than having to rewire the whole thing!

The 3 point lift on mine wont raise unless the PTO lever is engaged and I'd rather not have it engaged when I have the bushhog hooked up, that just seems like a disaster waiting to happen! It lowers just fine obviously and the fluid looks good and clear...

What gives now? Ha![/b]

The hydraulic pump is driven off the PTO shaft. So, if the PTO isn't engaged, you have no hydraulics....

You can buy a live hydraulics kit from TOH or Zane or cobble one together yourself using the excellent instructions provided by Kevin LaRue on the 'other forum'...... This allows you to drive the hydraulics from an add-on pump driven by the engine so it provides pressure to the lift as long as the engine is running....

Yep, working as designed.
Your options for transport include a lock that holds the lift up to
hold it while you turn the PTO off, or disconnect the PTO shaft
so the mower doesn't spin.
PTO has to be spinning for the hydraulics to lift until the NAA.

Thats a might dangerous! If people knew about the worlds most frivolous lawsuits back in the day, I could just see some old farmer suing the crap out of the Ferguson company for getting his leg or finger hacked off...Oh well, Ill look at the othet hydraulic systems and see what they entail as far as building one. I actually really enjoyed the fluid dynamics class when I was in Aviation Maintenance school! Thats fun stuff to me!

It is only as dangerous as the user. Some people that are used to modern equipment with all the safety interlocks probably should not own and old tractor.

You have to remember back when these tractor where built people had common sense which is pretty much a thing of the past. Now days machines have to be built to protect stupid people who have little or no common sense.

R Geiger is right on the money here.
Our sue happy world has created a lot safer equipment.
And a lot of less attentive, less informed, accident prone people.

Hobo is also correct. If you need the PTO not to spin, money
is better spent on a newer tractor. Trade the N or use it for
the purposes it is better intended for. They are plowing fools!
The PTO shaft can be covered when not in use. :)

Just unhook your shaft. You can install a chain on the mower to hold the shaft up out of the way, or weld a "U" type bracket on one of the uprights on the mower to hold the shaft. I have a piece of chain on mine with a slip hook on it.

You may be right about the common sense, but people didn't sue at the drop of a hat back then and lawyers didn't advertise on tv.

All you need for live hydraulics is an engine driven 3 GPM pump and some hose and fittings. Expect to spend around $300 if you DIY. Easiest way to mount the pump is shaft driven off the front of the crankshaft pulley.
