hydraulic lift 8N

For years now my 47 8N has exhibited "issues" with the lift function. Current symptoms: intermittent action. I raise the 2 row planter, drive to the area to plant, make a pass of 1200 feet or so, go to raise planter ... won"t lift. Disengage PTO, lower quadrant lever, rev engine, engage PTO, repeat.. nothing. Adjust leveling link....begins to lift.. move tractor forward... planter lifts. Head back to barn, planter drops slowly ... lower quadrant lever...raise lever ...planter raises up.Repeat 3 or 4 times under way. Get to barn .. lower planter..dump hoppers...raise planter..cell phone rings, climb off tractor...conversation lasts 3-4 minutes...planter stays fully raised. Climb on and head to another field ...planter drops slowly.....repeat. A real pain in the arse.

I had a shop look at the lift function a couple of years ago owing to similar symptoms. They said they removed trash from the pump which did seem to help for a while. Anything I can do short of pulling and rebuilding the pump? Not sure I"m up to that. Hydraulic oil is proper level and looks fine. Here"s a pic of the sunflowers cultivated Saturday.

Don't get discouraged. I just replaced the hydraulic cylinder and pistion which fixed my lift issue but now I have a problem with it staying up when the PTO is not running. In addition to making inquiries here on YTM, I've been studying various schematics and looking at parts info and believe it to be not as big a deal as I thought to pull it and either clean it up or rebuild it. I hate the thought of having to do it cuz I hate that kind of work in general but it will save me a butt load of money to do it myself.

It sounds to me like wear or adjustment in the lift controls.

The cam follower pins are known to be worn in most, after all of these years, if they haven't been replaced.

One thing that you could try would be loosening the 4 bolts that hold the lift quadrant, and sliding it back, or forward, and seeing if it helps.

What I really expect that it could be is wear, or possibly bend in the part at the base of the draft spring.

You do always hook your planter top link, in the lowest hole at the tractor don't you?

Here is an idea of what I am talking about as to wear in the part at the spring base.

These pics are from an online adjustment procedure for an NAA, but this part of it is the same as the Ns. might want to look over it.

It's not a hard job to R&R the lift cover and pump on an N... I'd bet it is still sticking from some trash or grit, and / or may need adjustment, and parts like the cam pin replaced.. plus gaskets after you pop the top.. perhaps new piston/oring/cyl if it leaks up there. etc.

opent he inspection port and look in.. look for leaks.. sticky control valve / rod.. etc.

post back.
