Hydraulic Problem 885

I have been rebuilding a old 885 that I pulled out of a field. I have rebuilt the engine and brakes. Now the problem I have is I cant get the 3 point to lift.

I have removed the inspection cover and looked in the rear of the housing and the rate adjusting cover. And also cleaned the bypass filter. I am getting what seems to be good flow of fluid up to the selectamatic valve control. I have not checked it with a gauge.so dont know the actual pressure.

Another big problem I have is I cant the selector dial to move. I also dont know what it is stuck on via the knob just free spins.

I also am wondering is there a simple fix. I dont need traction control or anything of that nature. Im not plowing or any heavy farming. I just need to lift a bush hog or a box blade.

In the first picture you show a slotted head screw. Under that is a valve that must move freely. Pull that valve spool out clean and put back in. Also in front of that screw should be another one that you have to unscrew and pull the spool out and make sure it moves freely. These are the spools that control you 3point and these will stick. If you do not have a book get one even an IT manual will help you on this.

You have a LOT of water contamination in that hyd fluid. Change the fluid and filter. Pull the valve body as was suggested above and make sure it's clean. The reason you can't move the selector is because you have to hold the 3 pt handle all the way back against the spring and then move the selector. Someone might have forced it int past and broken it.

I will try to remove the valve body. The one with the screw head in it I was able to get out. The other one is stuck pretty good. Any suggestions on removing it. I am gonna try soaking it in PB Blaster for a couple of days.

The fluid is got water in it cause during my rebuild I took the old shifter covers off. They where pretty wore out. I have beeneaning to replace them but can't find a suitable match without ordering them off line. I really don't want to replace until I get new ones, but I will as soon as I do receive them.

I will try that with the selector lever. I'm having to use vice grips to turn it since the knob was broke off.

I should have know better than to try and rebuild an old tractor from a field. But I thought a quick fix and sell it but looks like I will be in it for more than its worth. I'm a sucker for old equipment and trucks.

There is more to come out. the spool that the spring is in has to come out. For that is what seizes and will not allow it to work. Sometimes I have too us a wood dowel jammed into it to get it out. it can really be stuck in there. once you have it out polish it very good and clean it well.

is that the cover on the back of the axel houseing ? I have an 885 that the 3 pt don't work. The remote hydralics work fine but no 3 pt. It works great on a baler or pull behind swather.

Kilgore, check this link. It should be a huge help to you. You have a great tractor there. Change the fluid and filter. Free up these plungers and you should be good to go. Regarding your photo of the parts you removed from the one hole, I have NEVER seen a washer like that (the one with three holes drilled in it) in ANY of my David Browns. This could be your problem. Study the diagrams in this link. Let me know if you need the parts manual, owners manual and service manual for your tractor (I have all in pdf format- free of charge - although I think I recall that I have already sent them to you). After you get everything fixed and new boots put on, always keep your David Brown under a roof: translation "shed that David Brown" Good luck.

That "washer" with the 3 holes is supposed to be there. Theres a screen under that and a check ball. The whole body has to come out and a wooden dowel threaded into the valve body is the suggested method. The other body you do the same way with a smaller dowel. If that valve isnt free to move, that's the problem with the 3 pt right there.

Stop twisting the selector unless you've got the 3 pt handle back against the spring or you'll bust it for sure.

Thanks for the good information. I'm still working on it. I brought in my buddy who is a mechanical engineer and man did his face light up when he saw I have a problem for him to solve. So now I'm waiting on him to over engineer something to remove the valves. Luckly he works on machinery for a manufacturer plant. Buy in the meantime im gonna try the wooden dowel trick.

The washer with three holes came out of the smaller of the two valves. It's also the one stuck like the Dickens. I don't see anything else in it. The other one is free and I had it out and cleaned it up. It had a brass looking retainer with a small washer with a hole in the center over a screen.

Yea I got the selector valve thing figured out it I believe. I don't force anything, learned that from my buddy. Of its stuck I will usually try to figure it out before beating it with a hammer or forcing it with a pry bar.

Yea I know the fluid looks bad. I am gonna change it when my shifter boots and things come in. And didn't want to put
50 dollars of new fluid in it and then have to drain it out to pull the tractor apart.

And I will definatly have it covered when I got this fixed.
