Hydraulic Pump 1955 Ford 640 question

If the hydraulic pump (piston type) is bad (making loud noise), what is the best way for a novice to go about repairing it? Should I buy a kit and try the rebuild with very little experience or should I order a complete hydraulic pump and replace it. I've got the FO-20 repair manual for guidance and it looks a little out of my league to repair one. Can you trade the old one in for a rebuilt and save a little money? Any suggestions to do this on a budget will be much appreciated!

The pump on my 650 is getting/generating air. I bleed it and it works okay for several days.

I asked about repairs at a tractor repair shop. $60 labor and $42 for a rebuild kit if nothing major wrong with it. As for me, I shall take the pump off and take it to the tractor shop and let them handle the rebuild.

You may want to inquire about a shop doing the rebuild for you.

An inexperienced person can do the rebuild in two hours. And that includes time to get on the internet and research. The piston pump is as intuitive as it gets.

Is the three point jerky or smooth when it lifts? Is the pump noisey when the hydrauluc is lifting a load? Or is the pump noisey when just running, but not lifting anything. Timing gears have been known to make noisesdriving the hydraulic pump. A little more information would be helpful, without being able to hearing the noise. As to repairing the pump, if need be,take it off and apart and then decide weather you can repair it your self or have the work done profesionally.

earings, races, seals, pressed in valve seats and all???

Thank you all for the suggestions! A little more information: It only makes noise when you push the lift down, at about the halfway point, it starts making a knocking noise right at the hydraulic pump. When you lift the 3 pt up it stops making any noise. Another thing, when you cut off the engine with the implement up, it slowly goes down to the ground in about 1 to 2 minutes. Thanks again!

he pump is virtually unloaded except during actual lifting operation, so, one should expect any noise to increase when the pump is under the stress of a load. Once it reached the set high or full up position, the pump goes back to loafing. Since you lift ram/cylinder is s bit leaky, even if you have the implement raised and just sitting there idling, as it leaks down, this drop is sensed & once again the pump goes from loafing/unloaded condition back to work trying to correct the drop resulting from the leaky ram.......this cycle will repeatitself all day long.
P.S. A two minute leak down isnt good, but not so bad as to be un-usable either.

From your discription it sound more like pump drive problems. Remove the tach drive adaptor and reach into the end of pump with a 7/16 socket and see if the special bolt is loose. Perhaps the splines are worn between the drive gear and pump shaft. The way you discribed the noise would indicate timing gear noise or pump to cam gear noise..But I would look into the pump before going after any gears.
