Hydraulic pump gasket rant.

it can't just be me that's having these issues. Most if not all of the new hydraulic pump gaskets are like cardboard. They get weak when submerged in the oil then pop, now the pump leaks, why cant they make them out of something more resistant to pressure and oil. it seems as if they were made to be templates for another kind of gasket material then to be used as a gasket.

I bought my gaskets from our New Holland dealer. Had no problems at all When I rebuilt 2 pumps.

im thinking like I go to Napa or some place and buy some rubber gasket material and make my own gaskets. I fixed one side of the pump then the other blew.

The original gaskets had some tough fibers in them that held them together and resisted blowout. Trouble is, asbestos is frowned upon nowadays so the best gaskets you are going to find will have some fine glass fibers in them that are wimpy compared to the original, now banned fibers.

In truth its just a poor design.

Is it safe to assume that you are saying that the world seldom sees a flat 'paper' gasket sealing high pressure?

I didn't ask you about your ships. I did ask TOH what he meant with his statement. Still hope he will elaborate.
I understand that did you notice I liked your post? I was just commenting on how they are not uncommon in high pressure, high stress environments.

Plus, its Merica', so I said what I wanted to say 😘

I just wish, only if occasionally, folks would stay on subject and not always feel obligated to interject "other stuff". If you don't want to let TOH give a response and have a "must need" to talk about ship gasketing, start a thread about ship gasketing! Thank you.

Mister internet thread police, you need to chill 🥶

And it is on topic, paper gaskets ya know

We use them all the time on ships (y)

Mobile equipment hydraulic systems running at 2000 to 3000 PSI seldom if ever use paper gaskets. Recessed elastomeric seals are far more relisble.

Code 60 flange fittings like you would find in shipboard steam use high tech gaskets. Far cry from the gaskets used in an N series.

You assume I was talking about steam

TOH, Thanks for the clarification to me.....that was my guess as to what you were getting at.

I went to Napa and got some rubber fibre gasket, I recommend that stuff, tough to cut but has been working nice so far for the few hours I used it…
