hydraulic question

Hi all,
im building a log splitter and have a question on the best way to hook up 2 controls.
1 control for cylinder direction {in/out}
1 control for grapple crane contraption to lift large peices {up/down}
can i "t" the main hyd. feed lines?
i have provisions on hyd tank to run seperate return lines

All you need is a two spool open center valve. There will be six ports. In from pump, out to reservoir, and a pair for each cylinder. It would be similar to a tractor loader valve although some of them have a float position on one spool. But you could still use it. Go to www.surpluscenter.com for a new valve.

If they are closed center = yes, if open center = no. For open center you hook up in series, tank to pump,exit pump to enter first valve, exit first valve and hose/pipe to enter second valve, exit second valve to tank.

If one of the valves you have is a 'tandem center' which is a power beyond type valve, then you hook them in series. PB valves will have 5 ports. IN, RETURN, PB, RAISE, LOWER. The PB valve is the first in the circuit. Pump flow goes to it's inlet. PB port is hooked to the inlet of the NEXT valve and the returns of both valves are tee'd together. Then your respective work ports are plumbed to their functions.

Or you can just buy a proper 2 spool valve... Actually, log splitter vlaves generally have a detent on the return stroke so you can let go of the handle when the cylinder is retracting. Might want to look into that... and also consider that a detent kit can be added to a lot of Gresen and other make valves.

What are you going to use for hydraulic supply? Tractor (if so what model) or are you going to use a self contained small engine powered hydraulic pump/unit? Makes a difference what valve(s) you use.
