Hydraulic Release

I have a 1950, TA-20, that runs and operates exceptionally well. The hydraulics lift with ease. But, once you engage the clutch the attached implement starts to drop. It doesn't drop rapidly, but almost always reaches the ground before I can put it in gear and start to move...Suggestions please

The pump stops running when you push in the clutch on your tractor so you have a major leak somewhere in the hydraulic system. This has been covered very thoroughly in past posts so do a search on "Hydraulics" at this site and you will find good suggestions on trouble shooting this problem.

It's probably a TO-20 not a TA-20. This tractor does not have live hydraulics. It's driven by the pto shaft and that is engaged by the lever on the left side of the tractor below the seat. Since the pto is transmission driven, when you step on the clutch you disconnect the engine from the transmission and the pto and hydraulic pump have no source of power.

However, your lift should not drop so rapidly that you can't shift into gear. You have a leak somewhere in the hydraulic supply and the most likely place is the lift cylinder. There is also a potential leak point where the hydraulics supply goes into the lift cover from the pump.

Remove the right hand side plate from the tractor. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, STICK YOUR HANDS INTO THE HYRAULIC COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!
Start the engine and engage the pto. Using a flashlight look through the access hole up toward the lift cover and move the lift lever to the raise position. Is there fluid running down from above? Anything more than a few drops is a leak. If that looks good, using a mirror look into the upper right hand corner and see if there is any leakage from the top of the pipe that runs to the lift cover.
Report back on what you find.

Remove the left round port cover and check for leaks, drips are OK but running oil isn't. Check around the top and especially the front right corner, it is easier to see from the left side. If there are no oil leaks in the top then look in the bottom for oil swirling under pressure. To do these checks you need the engine running at about half throttle, don't put your hands inside when the engine is running. Once you find the leak, if you let us know we can give you the information you need to repair it. Don't try to tear it down until you know what the leak is.

You have a leak in the hydraulic that needs to be attended to. Not a major show stopper. Follow Johns instructions. If you have more questions post back.

Also how does the hood release? With one lever or two t-handles?

Thanks for the information...I ended up replacing the Hydraulic Cylinder, piston rings, gaskets, and control valve...It now works like new, maybe better. Do you know where or how I can get a cork or rubber friction disk for the hand throttle? Thanks in advance

Glad to hear that everything is OK now with your Hydraulic system. For the throttle, you can use the friction disc that fits the Hydraulic Lever, you can get these from a Sparex dealer as part S60635 or from an MF dealer as part 180889V1. If you carry out this work you will need to reset the engine governor as you will have to disconnect the linkage at the front of the Tank while you fit the Friction Disc. If you need this information just email me so I will have your address to send it too.I am presuming that you do have a gas engine in your tractor ..John
