Hydraulics questions

My TO35 is relatively new to me, replacing a TO 30. In most respects the 35 a considerable improvement over the 30 but I'm having one problem with it. The hydraulic pressure is less than I would expect it to be, such that cannot lift the ends of logs like I should be and the draw bar is slow to rise to its maximum. The oil is a bit milky and I do intend to replace it, though I don't know if that's the problem.

And that leads to my second question: what are folks using these days in the gear box/hydraulic reservoir? My owner's manual, written fifty years ago, recommends some sort of mineral oil but I'm wondering if there's an alternative these days. If mineral oil is the best option, where do I find it?

If milky it has water in it. Change takes 8 gallons. I buy the mineral
oil at TSC in a Black 2 gallon jugs that has on jug for older Ford
transmission. May have other problems but you need the water out. Has two
drain plugs below seat on bottom left side transmission. Refill with 1
1/2 jug and let it drain down before adding next jug.

Before you drain the oil...

Take the right side round cover off, put an implement on the 3 point, tell it to lift.

CAUTION! Look but don't reach in!

Look up inside the gearcase with a flashlight. Looking up you will see the bottom of the lift cylinder. There should not be oil streaming down, a drip is ok, but not a flowing stream. Also look for oil coming down the stand pipe (the tube that supplies oil to the cylinder), or boiling up from below the oil surface.

Oil boiling up can be from the lower stand pipe oring, or the pressure relief valve. The relief valve is further forward. The relief valve is a common failure, so given the chance, replace it.

If all that looks good, and still weak, slow, or jerky, the pump may need a repair or replaced with a rebuilt pump.

The top cover will need to come off to get to the cylinder or the pump. The stand pipe orings can be replaced by removing the small cap on top of the pipe.

Before you go in, I would recommend having a shop manual in hand first. The pump control linkage comes all the way down from the bottom of the cover. It must be released from the pump first. The linkage is complicated and fragile, the cover is very heavy and needs a lift to be removed.

There is a rubber boot on the draft link. It will need to be replaced, a real deal to do! The boot is necessary to keep water out of the gearcase.

You can refill it with the 90 weight mineral oil (not 90 weight gear oil!), or use 15w40 engine oil. The engine oil is better for cold weather use. I would not replace the oil until you determine what is wrong with the hydraulics. New oil won't fix it, even if it has water in it.
