I am l9oking at a hydro 686 , runs well and don't move ? Bad hydro ? Can a hydro from a 656 be used ? Can I put a standard trans in ? Or pull engine and replace a blown 282 in a 560

Well depends on just how much work ya want to do and how much ya want to spend . I am NO expert on Hydro's i leave that to Herr machine , they are the top experts on Hydro's . Yea i can test and fix simple things . It's just that hydros around here leave a bad taste in peoples mouths . I know of only one Hydro ever sold by the four local I H dealers when they were new . . There are simple checks one can make BUT ya NEED the BOOK . and NON of us on here really know , Yep your going to get a bunch of replays and NOt one of them really knows . Myself i would have to be at the tractor in question with my gauges and flow meter to tell you for sure . And i would have to use the BOOK .

First thing to check, does the hydraulic system work, steering, outlets, three point hitch, pto. If nothing works then flex plate is bad. If all these work then something with the hydro.

I have a Hydro 84 that's really handy on SOME jobs. I bought it with a spun rod bearing and repaired the engine and so far the Hydro has been fine. A GOOD Hydro is not cheap, and a BAD one gets expensive FAST!

Ok so what do you want to know ?? i don't have the time at this moment as i have a service call to run and not sure how long i will be out .

656-686 are for all intents and purposes the same tractor except engine options and styling.

A transmission repair at Herr's will run several thousand dollars, if it isn't something simple. Apparently if you call Herr's they will run you through some tests to determine how serious the problem is.

You can't "put in" a gear drive transmission, but you can swap the entire back half of a gear drive 656-686 on to the engine of the hydro. You will need a gear drive flywheel and clutch, and possibly frame rails if the rear end comes from a 656. I'm not 100% sure about needing frame rails.

To put the engine in a 560 you would need a different bell housing adapter plate, a gear drive flywheel, and a clutch from a "large frame" tractor such as a 756 diesel, 826 diesel, late 886, or 3088/3288.

What do you mean you can't put a gear drive in it . All ya need is a flywheel clutch and the back half of a gear drive tractor or i should say center section all the way up to the dash . Same as a SELECT AH SLUSH FORD . ya can put a standard trans in one of them .

To add to installing a gear drive transmission, TV talks about the center sections. The swap over to gear drive requires changing the ring gear on the differential to have the match to the gear drive pinion gear. The pinion and the main transmission shaft are one part. In the attached link is the 656 parts catalog. For whatever reason I do not find a 686 Hydro parts catalog. In the Power Train section subsections B13 and B15 will show you the difference in the pinion shafts, different gear ratios as well.

Well how many teeth difference is there . . like i said the hydro was vary unpopular around here . only one 100 was sold and one turned up at a local ford dealer and they about died with it on the lot as it was growing a beard . Then some reclamation company bought it for seeding strip ground and it died there and sat . Don't know if it is still setting where it died or not as i have not been down that way in maybe 30 years. Only hydro i know of that works well were on John Deere 750 and 850 Dozers but only if Al set them up . Back when the 750's came out i got CONNED into running a service company working in the oil patch around here and that company had the first J D 750 working in the patch . The owned of said company knew me from years back when i was sorta pup and worked for a large construction company and was lucky enough to be considered a FULL time employee . The ones that worked at the main shop were full time plus John Willis Jessy myself and Jim , the five of us did what ever we were all operating engineers , Plus John and i and willis drove lowboys i had a service truck as my company truck and i could do welding equipment repair on the job sites and was sent to Cat school to learn power shift trans mission as the owner was on a buying spree like a drunken sailor on shore leave . Wild Bill D knew me when i worked there , He knew i could run equipment i could drive low boy and know what i was doing and i could run a crew of men . The oil patch was a far cry from heavy construction other then location building other then the lack of a grade man or servayors (sp) to lay out shoot grade and elevations . What was needed was a pad about 250 feet wide and 350 feet long and as level as a pool table Plus two or three PITS to be dug with a dozer and a entrance road going in . Now i have run Cats from D 4 up to D 9 G's , a/c's from Hd 6 up to HD 21's I H from T D 9 up thru T D 25's an just give me about a half hour to get the feel of each and i can cut a grade to with in one inch of perfect . So wild Bill and yes he earned that name . Bugged me to come to work for him . And that was a first running a new 750 all hydrostatic Handled like a large skid steer and moved fast . It felt weird as you sat high and the sloping hold was deceiving as you had the feeling of going down hill. . That one took better part of a day to master to get the FEEL and did i say fast. I had never run anything that would move dirt so fast . If i adjusted the blade tilt just right i could roll top soil like a carpet and with the load sensing of the hydro you just shoved the forward revers control full forward and it did the rest no stalling out ground speed would give way to PUSH power and as the load lightened the speed would pick back up Move the control to full reverse and you were now going 8 Mph backwards make the swing in for the next cut and shove the control to full forward drop the blade and roll dirt and adjust ground speed to load . as you sat there carrying grade . Just heed the caution warning tag on the dash that read FASTEN SEAT BELT BEFORE operating this machine . In soft dirt this was not a problem as going from full travel forward to full travel revers she would spin the tracks , BUT once you got down to the Yellow if you went from flat out forward to flat out reverse You would find yourself layen spread eagle out on the hook after you got acquainted with the steering levers and you KAZOOTY VALVES . We had and issue with it not long after i started to run it with the right charge pump and Deere sent out a whole team of engineers along with AL . once rep-airs were made they wanted to see what i was doing with it SOO Day one was location building , day two was moving a drilling rig that weighed in at just about 200000 lbs and handling the pipe tubs that weighted around 40 ton each plus dragging trucks in and out with the 60000lb winch . The one asked me what would make it a better dozer and i told him Operators with two right arms and hand plus the left. and when asked why i said when working this for all one can get out of it your lacking a second right arm and hand , Your left hand is controlling your forward and back while your right iws doing the steering and you have to stop steering to drop the blade and start the next cut then jump back on the steering levers to correct . OR ya need to make them with pedal steer as your feet are doing NOTHING . The next year models had peal steer as and option . I did not get one as i got out of the oil patch for a few years before i was asked once again to run the mobile equipment end for a new start up company and to do the buying of the STUFF needed , now that was fu spending someone else's money on TONKA TOYS . This time it was a much larger company with 4 D 6 D's, 4 750 B's and 4 850 B's and a gaggle of trucks track hoes ditching machines welders 350 frac tanks and a fleet of 4 wheel drive pick ups along with four low boy outfits along with two crews to keep thing moving 24-7 . And Al was the deere service tech that came when we needed him. Al taught me how to make the simple adjustments on the hydro. but i am buy no means and expert i'll leave that to Herr machine . As to have i ever done a hydro to gear NO , Could i yes , will i find something i did not figure on maybe could i over come a problem YEP . Did i lok up or talk to the local I H store about something like this NO. Would it be cost affective NOPE . Could you find a whole rear half YEP . Do i know where to look YEP . I have my go to places that i have dealt with for many years .

That's not putting a gear drive IN it.

You can't take the hydro "out" and put a gear drive "in." You have to swap the entire rear end, as I said, and as you said.
