Hello All,

The Ford manual I have does not specifically say which type of fluid to use for the rear diff and hydraulic. Just standard gear oil and standard hydraulic fluid? Regular gear oil in the tranny also?

Its for a 1963 Ford 4000. Thanks. Ed

Ed, you can use gear oil in the differential and manual transmission if you want. You can also use regular hydraulic fluid in the hydraulics, but the actual specs for all of the fluids have been superseded over the years so that the currently recommended fluid for all of them (plus power steering reservoir if you have one) is a UTF that meets the Ford M2C134D specification. If you have a Select-O-Speed (10 forward and 2 reverse gears) transmission, then you must use the M2C134D UTF in that. Most people use the 134D UTF in all of their sumps except the engine, as you only have to keep one oil in stock, plus it avoids problems of cross contamination if you ever get a leak between the sumps, which is not uncommon on these old tractors.

ditto what sean said.

I like to use gear oil in the diffy and tranny, and utf in the hyds.

I do not use palin hyd oil in the hyds in case it mixes with the diffy. utf and gear oil mixed will still protect the diffy.. hyd oil and gear oil mixed will thin out the diffy protective lube however.

in my area, generic brand UTF oil, usually from warren unilube, is actually a few bucks cheaper per 5g pail, than plain hyd oillike aw/iso 32/46/64
