Hydrulic oil pump

Is there any snags that I need to look out for while pulling the hydraulic oil pump on my 1973 4000, 3 cylinder gas tractor.

Following the owners manual for checking the oil in the rear axle I unscrewed the wrong screw.

I can't get the screw to tighten up now, so I am thinking that there was a nut or something on the inside and fell to the bottom of the axle center housing.

That bolt you have marked on the left in your picture threads into a bracket on the inside that holds a tube in place. You don't need to pull the pump to fix things if that's the one that you removed by mistake. The bracket has just shifted out of place, most likely in the downward direction a little.

If you have no other reason for pulling the pump, don't bother.

On the opposite side of the tractor is a round cover and you can just remove that cover and look inside with a flashlight and reach in and hold the bracket in place while you have someone else get the bolt started for you (unless you've got really long arms and can reach both at the same time yourself).

The other one that you have marked is the level check plug for the rear end hydraulic fluid. My owner's manual is for the 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 series and mine has a picture indicating the level check plug is near the one on the left in your picture for the 2000, 2110, 3000 and 4110 models, but there is a separate picture for the 4000 that shows that it is in the location of the one you have the arrow pointing to on the right in your picture.

Thanks for the reply, Sean. I pulled the inspection plate off this afternoon and looked in there. I tried to get my hand in there and feel what was there. There was enough stuff in the way that I could not get a real good idea what is there.

So now I am going to pull the hydraulic lift cover off and go at it that way. In the one book I have, it said that this was an easier way to go about seeing what was turned loose.
