I bought the 350U...

I just wanted to let all the folks helping me with info on a 350 Utility that I decided to buy the tractor. I got what I believe to be a good deal. I am pretty excited to be honest. I realize lots of folks have differing opinions on this model specifically (utilities vs row crops) but it should fit my needs very well. I have sloping ground at my house so the lower center of gravity is a big plus to me.

The tractor has almost everything I wanted. The one exception being a remote on the rear for implements.

It is a 350U that has its original Yellow industrial paint (thats what the owner tells me anyway). It has an IH front end loader, Power steering with what seemed to be very little play when I test road it (This was a big issue in deciding to buy it or not), 2 point fast hitch w/ draft control, IPTO, and TA. The owner hadn't use the TA in 6 years so he wasn't sure if it still worked but it did work just fine he told me. It has a foot control for the throttle which is sorta like a gas pedal... thought that was neat. The rear tires are 80% and have both inside and outside cast weights on them, Rims in good shape too. Also hadn't started it in 9 months and he wasn't sure if the battery would be dead or not but we hopped on and she cracked right over and started better than my Super A at home will!

I will most likely need to add a remote as well as get the exhaust going up instead of down under the tractor. Those are the two main points...

The owner also said he was using 80W oil in the rear end and told me I needed to drain that every year due to water getting in it but I am thinking that should be Hytran in there and not gear oil.... correct? He told me sometimes it might freeze in the winter... Hopefully that didn't hurt anything.

Around here, $1750 would be called stealing. And yes on the Hytran in the tranny. Seems like last time I changed mine (a 300U, which is almost the same tractor) I drained out 2 gallons of water, 2 gallons of hytran and then I added about 15,000 gallons of hytran to fill it.(just kidding, but it was a lot). I'd really enjoy seeing some pictures. For the exhaust, you would probably want to just get a "U" after the manifold and not cut a hole in your hood. Those hoods are fairly rare, and to cut one would be a shame.

Wow Fred. That is a bunch of Hy Tran. My book say's 7 gallon. That don't seem like enough though does it? I have all Farmalls so I don't know for sure. I am looking at a couple of utilities though. Might buy me one.

Hi Fred... I don't want to feel bad about buying it! heh. The hood is in very nice shape. The nose has a few dents.. So I will think about this U as that should save the hood. Would I just use some black pipe or something and screw it together? Not much of an exhaust expert.

I get the tractor on Sunday hopefully. I am driving it home from the owners house. Its about 5 - 7 miles. Hopefully a nice ride!

7 gallons isn't alot. its only a 5G bucket and a 2G jug from tractor supply. my granda bought a 350U back in the 70's. it was in rough shape, needed new front tires, rusty, motor and TA shot, and he paid around $3000. before my grandpa got the tractor, it had been used for yours for cleaning manure out of barns, it had a loader, but was not sold with the tractor. the tractor looks and runs good today, but the TA is shot again. please post some pictures and let us know so we can get a look at your new toy

The U shape should be made from muffler tube, Stainless Steel would be ideal. If a bracket could be made to bolt to the two front hood bolts to hold the strain of the muffler it would be very tidy. You will never regret the purchase. JimN

BTW, I paid $2500 for mine, TA doesn't work and the loader frame was all busted to heck. I rebuilt my power steering gearbox for about $340 because it kept leaking all the oil out (the gearbox itself, the p/s valve unit and cylinder are fine). It's a heck of a lot more tractor than a 8N Ford for less money, even out west here where tractor prices are high (Western Washington).

I will have to start looking at options on this muffler then. I really don't exactly what you mean on the bolts just yet at least to visualize it but will have a look at her sunday.

JK. I will try to get some pictures of it Sunday evening on here although I'll have to figure out how to post them. she isn't really the prettiest tractor ever but I am not one to be real particular about that. I can give it a fresh paint job eventually. for now she will get to do some work!

you should be excited. what a deal!
my 350 high utility has an ugly square hole in the hood where someone got tired of having a hot foot and moved the exhaust.
IF your 350 has 2 aluminum handles on the right side of the seat, and one works the fast hitch, and the other does nothing, you just need to put hoses into the plugged holes on the block that does nothing and you'll have the remote you were talking about. that was the situation on my 350 when i bought it.

Here is the Idea I discussed, it will hold the muffler and keep the pipe from stressing the manifold. JimN
