I hate Coyotes

Another reason to protect our gun rights. We run Pyrenees and Pyrenees cross guard dogs with our sheep and goats here and that's all that saves us. And the enviro-idiots want to introduce wolves and cougars around here!

Coyotes love dogs and cats. I've been told that if the dog won't come to where they are, they send in a female to lure the dog out to where they can kill it. Coyotes roamed the streets where we used to live and took away any pets that were outside - except sometimes the eagles and large owls took the smaller ones before the coyotes could.

Sad deal! I almost lost Rusty dog a few years back while plowing. Rusty usually runs ahead of me but this time he had stopped to check out a mouse or something. A large coyote came toward me at Rusty full speed. I stood up on the tractor and screamed HEY. The coyote never slowed down but made a U turn, jumped a ditch, turned around and looked at me. I lifted the plow, drove the 1650 back, picked up Rusty and took him to the house. I never saw that big one again but last year a small one was up by the North horse lot. That one stopped and looked at me. By the time I got my rifle he was gone. The game warden advised me to be armed when I work out back and do chores. I never do though.

Most of the coyotes in the SE US are Carolina Red Wolf/Coyote crosses according to the
State wildlife people.I hate the danged things have had them kill calves,goats,small dogs and cats.They've also apparently cleaned out most of the skunks and possoms around here
so I guess they do some good

Exactly, there was a good reason those animals were hunted to extinction in many areas years ago.

I hay all of the area around a friend's house for just that reason. She took the dogs out one night and was standing right there when they snatched it.

At night I close our dogs in the yard around the house. One night there was a ruckus. I went out and found three of them at the corner of the yard trying to lure my Burnese Mountain Dog over the fence. He's 125 pounds and they were willing to tangle with him.

You believe whatever you want, all animals have their place. The American Indian had it right, they only killed what they needed. They were in the way of the white man so the Indian was basically eradicated.

You are right. My SIL lost 2 Yorkies to them. They have one to lure the dog(s) out and the others ambush from the side. I've tried to shoot them but they are too darned smart. Smarter than me at least.

A few A10s around here would help.Took a load of feed out Friday. Had to move the feeder because the hogs had ripped up the ground. Around the feeder.

Sorry for your loss!!! We kill all of them we can. I have had trouble in the past with them killing calves. 4-5 years ago we hunted them real hard all year and I do mean hard. We got over 75 of them from just our area. We now get 20-30 each year. They rarely come around the house or buildings much any more since we have started hunting the heck out of them.

I couldn't care less about a single lion in Africa. In fact, read "Death in the Long Grass" someday and find out just how lovable lions are. Things that bother me include those who take a predator issue and try and turn it into a condemnation of predator control by attempting to link it to race and the mythical perfection of "the indians". The fact is that "the indians" killed as much as they could with the tools they had available. TO think they did otherwise, that they had some sort of conservation plan in nationwide effect, is ludicrous and defies both logic and historical record. Read up on it and get your information from something other than Hollywood.

Sorry to hear of your loss. He probably went down defending his turf and people.

We have sheep, turkeys, chickens and guineas and I keep a constant eye out for coyotes. This girl had a chicken in her teeth when, happily for the world's luckiest chicken, I got to the rifle and hit her just as she entered the treeline at a dead run. I was happy when the chicken came running back up the hill (we still have her). I was astonished when I found the coyote. 150 yard running shot!

The rifle is a break-open single shot .223 Rem with a 4X scope. Will hold 3/4" five-shot groups at 100 yards when I am having a good day. My eyes aren't what they were. Perfect for watching the DMZ (aka: mowed strips outside the fencing). I won't say here how many coyotes and foxes have had a career ended by this little carbine. Many woodchucks as well.

Sorry about your loss. Neighbor up at my vacant property feeds a bunch of "outdoor" cats outside their garage each night. She saw 2 coyotes at the food dishes couple weeks ago, none since. Her husband has been sitting with his rifle waiting. I see the cats running through the fields and across the road all the time. They also hole up in an old open shed on my property. Surprised the coyotes haven't gotten them. I figure they must be pretty tough and "street smart" to survive.

Sorry for your loss. Heard electronic calls at night lure them in the best. We have been having problems with coyotes last few years. Our deer population is almost non existent now. Bow hunting the last month and only seen handful of (small) deer. Last year harvested only 2 deer all season. Starting to worry as we have dogs, and my two year old daughter.

Sorry to hear about your dog. Years ago we had the neighbors Siberian Husky hanging around all the time. One night a pack of yodel dogs got into it with him. He survived it and killed a couple of them in the process, but he was so torn up he could barely get out of his bed for a week. There was enough dog/'yote hair piled up to pack a mattress with. Quite a few chunks of Husky-sized mouthfuls of 'yote hide laying around, too. Things got rather "intense" for a few minutes.

Reviving an old thread rather than start a new one with the same title.

My 16 acres is half dry and half wet with the wet part only letting my tractor and mower on it in late July. I've only lived here 4 years and haven't been able to knock down all the grass out there yet due to various issues but this year I'm 99% done. That gives me a great field of view from my porches to watch the elk, deer, and 'yotes amble through the field.

We've long had issue with the 3 local packs around the area and I've taken 3 previously. Well this past January we rescued an old Lab to make our farm dog and this morning while I was out cutting a big, bold as brass 'yote was getting ready to run down my dog. Now this is a big dog, he weighs in at about 70ish pounds and the coyote was about half his size. The fact that he wasn't afraid of the tractor noise kind of shocked me.

I was able to power down the machine and dash to the house for my PSL and took a 150yd shot that put him down right about the time he was getting ready to charge for my dog. I'll be taking his pelt off shortly and using the meat as a lure for his buddies. Figure a nice tall tripod out in the field should bring some of them in to scavenge this evening.

Now I don't mind predators at all and these guys have their niche. The past few years I haven't seen skunks or 'coons at all and that's not normal for the area so I know the predator to prey ratio is way out of whack. Maybe with a few well placed shots I'll get to protect my chickens and corn from some quieter pests.

Coyotes have their place, far away from my place. I'm the master of what is on my property and any animals are there at my pleasure. Rabbits, possums and foxes and even coons are OK as long as they don't bother the llamas or destroy anything. Ground hogs and moles are destructive and have to go. No coyote better get within rifle shot range, we have small dogs and baby llamas on occasion and I won't abide having them anywhere near.
