I made it to retirement

Last Tuesday was my last day at at work. Now what am I going to do? Lol. My first job off the farm was working at the feed mill .aking feed and bagging fertilizer which I started the first working day after the first of the year in 1981, I dont remember the exact date, just that it was the Monday after the first. That means I worked just about exactly 45 years. One thing that occurred to me recently is that in those 45 years I never called in sick at all. I took days off for things but always with notice, never just missed a day or called the same day. I did jump around from job to job a lot, worked at the mill, as a commercial tree planter, landscaper, worked in a tractor salvage yard, worked commercial construction, a welder and a truck driver.

The question is now what? Lol. Hopefully some of those projects I've been putting off will get done.

I've been retired since Jan. 2005. What you "feel like" doing is what gets done. The older you get the worse it gets....currently at 84. Some piddly, slightly undesirable jobs that would only take you a few minutes and little effort to complete (house work mainly) don't get done on days "you don't feel like it". On other days when you do "feel like it" they get done, usually only takes a few minutes, and you feel better about yourself.

I find that I don't want to sign up for anything that requires me to be at a certain place at a certain time......doctor's appointments are bad enough and get to be more often as you age. Would that keep me busy in my spare time....yes but I "don't feel like" having a commitment. I enjoy being outside working on farm things and I usually have enough of them to stay busy. Seldom does a day go by that I don't find something to occupy my time for that day.

Folks that don't mind a commitment....like when you had to get up every morning and go to work, can have plenty to do in a charitable capacity. Always bodies needed to help those in need, both financially and physically......and you will feel good about yourself having helped others less fortunate.

Good luck!!!!!

Congratulations With all you got going on it won't be long before your wondering how you ever had time to work a real job. Time will really fly by too. I retirered after 35 years from my 60 hour a week truck driving job 2010 and it seems like it was yesterday.

Congratulations on getting out of a clock mandated job. I'm sure your farm will keep you as busy as you want. If money is needed still your diverse skill set should work out well in a freelance capacity.

Enjoy!

Congrats, Jon! Welcome to the club :)

For me, it's been 10 years or so. Being self employed and having moved to the country, all my customers were in the city, so a 90 minute drive twice a day. Needless to say, I don't miss that. Luckily, that wasn't every day. Probably half the days I was either working here on my computer, or on the phone with them.

And I've never understood how some people lose direction once they retire and die soon afterward. For me, there has been zero shortage of stuff to keep me busy. Maintaining my high ground is a full-time job that I can now finally put the time I want to into it. And I'm set financially, so no worries there.

Enjoy the freedom (y)

Congratulations for making it this far! I have been retired 6 1\2 years and enjoying it. I cannot believe that time goes by so fast. Just keep on keeping on.

Congratulations! May it be the best job you ever had! (y)

For me it ran in streaks. First, I got caught up on some projects. Then for a while I had nothing to do and got bored. Then gradually I fell into a routine--did a part time job here and there, found some other projects, etc. Now I try and get uptown for coffee a couple times a week with some other guys and spend time visiting, just to be around people. Also, it seems like simple projects take longer now than they used to! ;)

Don't worry--it'll all work out. Best of luck to you!

Congrats, jon f!! Glad you made it that far. I'm not that far behind you. SWMBO already has my to-do list waiting. I have to make it at least another 5 to 7 years to get all that done.

Congratulations. My prediction, within a year you will wonder how you ever found time to work.

Well done. You'll stay busy.

10 yrs Christmas Eve for me, I try to do something positive every day, sometimes that’s just finishing the pot of coffee on the porch with the dogs 😀
