I ruined my 8N engine block

While trying to fix my 8N I ruined the engine block. However, I"m not giving up. I have a like new AC Gen Set to trade for a rebuilt engine.

What's wrong with the block... even if you don't want to mess with it, could it be salvaged by someone in need of one?

I was trying to remove the #4 exhaust valve seat when I broke through the casting. I seriously doubt it can be repaired. The hole is about 1/2" inch long and about 1/4" wide.

May I ask how did you manage to do that?

I removed the #4 intake valve seat rather easily. Sooo, I thought I could pry loose the #4 exhaust valve seat too. I have prooven once again that I'm no mechanic.

I wouldn't scrap it. The right person could almost certainly repair it, and as this old beasts become more scarce, the day may come when someone would be glad to have it!

George Miller Machine is about a 100 miles from me and now in my Rolodex!!! I've known a couple really extraordinary Navy welders and as soon as I saw his advice for gas torch and CI filler rod I knew he was a winner. The pictures just confirmed it. That heater box repair reminded me of the job one of the Navy guys did for me on a TR4 transmission case job that was missing several large sections - just a gas torch,aluminum filler rod, and patient skill. Guys like that are as much artist as they are craftsman.

I agree.. it's likely that a skilled welder who knows and works on cast iron could repair it.

My guess - more than the cost of a used replacement block. Repairs like the ones pictured usually only make econmic sense when there is no alternative source for a replacement part. I will be interested in hearing the response when you get it.
