i think i messed up

i cleaned 5 driveways in a 3 hr period a little later and smelled hyd fluid it was comming out of the starboard side i shook the tire and noticed it moved -the big nut on the wheel was about 1/2 off i tightened it up. did i ruin the seal.it was 5 degrees above temp.i only had a 15 in cresent wrench so i could"nt tighten it down. how tight is it suppose to be

What kind of boat were you plowing snow with???

Seal maybe still ok but as far as how tight. If I remember right it need to be torqued to 450 ft/lbs. Which is a lot more then that wrench you had will do unless you use a big cheater bar

450 ft-lbs, probably not a 15" crescent job unless you are a really big boy!
Probably not ruin seal...you will know in time. If much oil ran out and you were not on big slope, you might want to check to be sure your hyd is not over-filled.

Davy........yer a good guy fer being so neighborly plowing all them driveways.......BUT....

You do know you hydraulically piddled on yer brakeshoes too, don't you? It ain't the first time and won't be the last time. And NO, it ain't a tractor killer either. Didja ruin yer seals? maybe. Replacing yer seals ain't no big thing, but that NUT is a BIG thing.

Heres the deal, that BIG NUT is supposed to be torqued to a gutt-bustin' 450ft/lbs and ain't no puny 15" cresent wrench gonna do that fer you. But its better'n 'nuttin'. You can gitt-bye fer now. It takes a 3/4" drive 2" socket with 4-footer cheater bar to really HONKDOWN on that big nut to 450ft/lbs. Don't worry, you can't overtighten, but you've already found out what under-tight does haven't you?

What else happens is you wear the tapered spline of yer hub and you gitt east'n'west slop at the top of yer northbound ag-bar tire. You'll hear it clunk and see the bignut washer clearance gap. New hub $50 (cheap) New brakeshoes $50 (cheap)

Me? I'd check that 5-gals ov hydro-tranny oil for OVERFILL by pullin' the 6-o'clock bolt of yer 6" round tranny dippstick and let enny overfill dribble down the side of yer tranny overnite innna buckett. You may have overfill with WATER from a BAD torn and cracked rubber tranny shifter boot. ($5, cheap)

Inspect yer BIG NUT fer missing safety wire clippie. ($2, cheap) You can't HONK yer NUT without removing the wire clippie first, they rust and fallout. Sometimes ya haffa 2-part squeeze'm rearaxle nut. ($25, not so cheap) but really works good on worn axle threads.

Theres lottsa good advice about servicing yer rearaxle seals, bearings, brakes, hubs in the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board. And of course, the necessary I&T FO-4 maintenance manual. ($25, cheap) It even has pictures fer the reading challenged........Dell

thanks dell i will do as you suggested all my neighbors have heart conditions and need a little help (if their driveway are full i'll get it ). my dad taught me don't think of what you have to do just do it. I THANK GOD THAT TIRE DID'NT FALL OFF when i was using it.i guess GOD was looking out for me.after all it his tractor i just get to use it.

If ya gotta use a cresent to tighten that nut the trick is to tighten it far as you possibly can then give it another quarter turn.

When Me get drunk it's usually the Starboard side that Me feed the fish on. That's how Me know about them marine terms. Only got sick once in Me life out in the Gulf at 180 miles off shore and at 19foot seas. Me captian said we had to stan by this rig until the Hurricane pass through. Me wasn't drunk then but boy me sure wish Me was. Me not work fer dat company anymore cause Hurricanes and boats don't mix. Never again buddy, you catch me out there again like dat. Fish eat good on Starboard side for the whole week dat trip. Thank God fer them dry saltine crackers.

Actually they are a waist of good money,,, you can not HONK'EM DOWN,,, its impossible to do,,, not enuff shoulder for a socket to grab holt to,,, bout all they are good for is to provide a stop so the hub don't fall off ,,, don't fix nuttin...

The seal would b the least of my worries,,, if the hub and axle are worn,,, no seal will hold up,,, tighten that booger up and recheck for slop at the axle nut/hub,,, if the nut bottoms out fer the hub is tight you have a big job ahead of ya,,, run it till ya git out of a jam,,, then fix it rite,,, No magic axle nut less you are in a jam.

I have an older friend, ex Navy, and he "keeps me on my toes" with port and starboard, as he uses those terms when he's explaining a repair he needs to have done, so I'm pretty accustomed to the terms, used around tractors!

Old, how did you get that handle? I was in the navy 62-71, that makes you young. Right. I was in submarines, an old Diesel electric for 4 years and then put a Nuke fast attack in commission.

Handle came from 2 places. One is from a pony we had years ago and we called her oldcoal, she was 30 plus years old. 2nd place is from where I learn what I know, from old people. I learned at a young to keep my mouth shut and ears open and you could learn a lot. So the name old comes from those 2 places. Oh by the way I also earned my dolphins
