I think the generator is shot

The new to me super 88 doesn’t charge so I took the generator off to check it out. Caked with dirt inside, armature rusty. I cleaned it up on the wire wheel, I thought it was supposed to be magnetic but it’s not. Took the brushes out, the arms that hold them were rusted but got them to move but the springs are broken. Probably cost more than it’s worth to repair, good candidate for an alternator. Your thoughts?

As to the armature being magnetic, it's NOT supposed to be.

that commutator is burnt. that generator is a garbage basket case . should be lots of used stuff out there .

Looks more to me like brush material is smeared on the commutator, I don't see any evidence of "thrown solder" from excessive heat. If i wanted to use it I'd clean it up, clean out the undercuts, then check it for shorts and on the growler. Only if those tests failed after it was cleaned up would I condemn it.

(Of course, if a close up inspection showed loose or raised segments there would be no use to proceed with cleaning it up.)

To me if there is no need for it to be original and an alternator will fit why would you spend a dime towards making a system with a generator work. Particular these days with a regulator that is a gamble on reliability. Three wire Delco 10si for the win.
And armatures only have a working magnetism when energized by the brushes. I may be wrong but I believe the slight residual magnetism is held in the field shoes that are bolted in the case with the field coils around them that directs the generators polarity. Which when the armature spins it creates the initial power to pull in the cut out relay.

I'd at least give fixing it a try. Clean up the commutator and if the connections to the windings aren't melted it's worth a try. Check the fields for continuity and some resistance. Get the third brush moving.

If your goal is a good dependable charging system, then a good time to put a 1 wire alternator on. You never want to call yours junk until a full cleaning has been done and all things checked out. By the pictures it looks tough but maybe a good parts unit for your next project.

Super 99, I am not sure where abouts you live, but I have two or three generators taking up space that I need to get gone. If you want one your welcome to it, I'm a confirmed alternator user myself, so will never waste my time on generators or voltage regulators. gobble
