IC14 12V conversion coil

I need a coil for B converted to 12 volt. I don't know the differance between the NAPA IC12 and the much less expensive IC12-SB. Anyone know the differance and correct one for the application? thanks

No I don't sorry. But you are throwing your money away if you are not buying a Pertronix Flamethrower coil for your B. At $35 it's not that much more than you have to pay for an entry level coil like the NAPA, but for the extra money you'll get so much more fire that I don't buy anything else anymore. They have both the 3 ohm 12v resistorless coil and the 1.5 ohm 6v or 12v "used with a resistor" coil in black or chrome.

In order to answer your question, we will need to know if you have a ballast resistor in your 12 volt ignition circuit or not. It almost sounds like IC12 and IC12-SB are 1.5 ohm and 3 ohm coils respectively but I wouldn't think that would affect the price, at least it shouldn't. It doesn't one whit among the Pertronix coils for example.

Do you have a volt/ohm meter? Care to take an ohms reading across the primary of the coil you already have?

matthewh,
The expensive one is made by Echlin, probably in the US. The cheap one is part of NAPA's Mileage Plus Electrical line and is surely imported. I would guess the electrical properties would be the same.

Thanks for flamethrower input.

As best I can tell, both coils are 12v coils not requiring external resistor (3 ohm). I found the NAPA part number(s) here in the archives for coils used in 12v conversions. I thought that the SB may be just left off in some discussions, but I found both coils listed on the NAPA site. One for IC14 for $48 and the IC14SB for $19.

I do not currently have a resistor. I can check the impediance, but as I already let the smoke out of it by leaving the ignition switch on, I did not bother. Come to think of it, if it were a low impediance coil and no reisitor on a 12v system, it might explain why it got so hot so fast.

thanks
