Idle Issues on 8n

Several weeks ago I was having an issue with loss of power. 8n would idle great but bog down when attempting to let clutch out to move and if trying to move up any small incline would lose power and die.

I took carb off and made sure it was clean. I had rebuilt it a couple month ago. everything looked good. Put it back on with same issues.

I read in the archives about resetting the main carb jet. I revved motor up turned main jet until it started to stumble and back it back slightly and it sounded better. I did not attempt to drive it to see if my adjustments helped at the time.

About a week later I was finally able to get back to tractor. I attempted to start it and ended up flooding it. (I do that often if I am not careful) I finally got it started up and now I cant get it to run over an idle. I can turn lever all the way up and see the linkage move at the governor too but no change or increase in power, still runs at idle. If I move lever toward actual idle it will try to die.

I also noticed that when lever is all the way or half way open it would backfire also.

I have encountered several issues from electrical to hydraulics and have been able to resolve them, but this has got me stumped.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kyford8n,Check for weak spark, spark should jump a 1/4"-1/2"in open air.Weak spark will cause the problems that you are having,I like a good hot 1/2" or more spark for a good starting good running engine.

Den N Ms may be right, but you say you can see the linkage move at the governor, but can you see the linkage move at the carburetor? I would think that if you opened the throttle with a weak spark it would cough, stumble and die, not just keep on idling.

Well, I feel like a complete idiot.

I have been trying to figure out my hard start, power issues for several weeks now, when I would actually get a chance to get back to my tractor.

Well last night I went back through carb, gas flow, etc. then I decided to trace my plug wires and noticed that somewhere along the way I had crossed my #3 and #4 plug wires at my distributor. Flipped them to where they were supposed to be and presto, all is as it should be.

I had been really frustrated with this thing for several weeks. I couldn't believe that was all it ended up being. Lesson learned.

You guys have been a great help on several issues I have worked on. There is a great multitude of knowledge on this site.

Thank you
