Ignition problems

Here I go again...I will repeat myself and
tell you that I have very limited
knowledge of mechanics and engines, but
I've got a 58 MF65 gas that's got a
generator, and has been covered to an
electronic ignition. We have replacedall
the wires on the ignition side of this
tractor. Replaced the coil, tested the
starter, changed key switch. When trying
to start the engine, have both gear shift
and hi/lo selector in neutral, we get
nothing. Occasionally, we'll get a weak
attempt at firing, but not enough to
start. I have a good mechanic who has
checked for power at all points. We
usually hear no clicking, when pushing the
button start. I'm ordering a new rotor
and cap, new key switch per his
suggestion, but we're at our wits end. He
says we're getting power to starter, coil nd switch. Help, please

If your getting power to the starter but the engine is not turning over good chance the starter it self is bad or one of the battery cables is bad but still good enough to show power but not be good enough to spin the starter over

Clarify terms. Crank = starter turning the engine over. Fire = engine starts to run, may or may not stay running. Running = starter disengaged the engine has fuel, air, ignition and stays running.

If you get nothing (no click, no starter engaging and cranking the engine over) when you push the start button that is a starting system problem. You can replace ignition parts (cap, coil, plug wires, rotor, etc.) until the cows come home and it won't help a dead starter turn the engine.

If the starter turns the engine over and the engine doesn't fire, that is likely an air, ignition, or fuel problem.

We really need to know how your mechanic has determined there is proper electrical power to all points in the starting system. Did he do voltage drop tests to see if power was failing somewhere in the start circuit when the starter button is pushed, or was it just a test light check? If all the voltage checks were ok but the starter doesn't crank, did he recommend removing the starter and having it checked? Have you removed the starter and cleaned the mounting surfaces of the bloc and starter to ensure a good ground? Did he try jumping around the solenoid? Did he check the neutral switch? Where is the ground cable of the battery connected to the tractor?
