Ignition Question

I have a 49 with front dizzy/ 12 volt conver. Question is can anyone shed light on the "proper" (I know its not the correct set up) way to wire the universal ignition switch that someone has put on it? A diagram etc or any advice. I am just trying to get this thing started before I go back and put the correct switch with push start etc. Also, once the battery is connected, the screw on the one wire at the coil is always hot-- normal? Thank you

All of the ignition switches I know of send power to the coil full time and monetary to the starter solenoid .

Your 8N has a solenoid that gets its power internally and needs the small terminal grounded to complete the circuit to send power to the starter .

Automotive solenoids need to have this same terminal energized not grounded to function .

A toggle switch or keyed switch from the battery to the coil and a push button from ground to the solenoid will get it started .

The safety switch ( push button ) could be in working order . Take a hot wire from the battery + to a light bulb then to the terminal on the push button . when you push the button it should ground the wire , completing the circuit and the light should come on . Check to see it the bulb works by ground the wire on the shifter handle .

ditto what another poster said.

power in, power out. don't matter how many contacts the ignition switch has. find 2 that are common when on, and not common when off.. that's all the coil needs.

Most have markings by the terminal lugs. Should read..

B or Batt=Battery

I=ignition (to coil)

S=solenoid or starter relay

A or Acc=accesories (heater fan, raidio ect)

I have that type on my N. B of course to battery and I to the resistor block. I wired mine with the acc to the lights. If the acc side is big enough to power a heater fan and wipers on an older car it should be able to power the head lights without a problem. Been like that for many hours of operation over 2 years with no problems. If you are worried you could wire the acc to a high amp relay. An auto parts store should carry those and should have an idea of how they should be wired. Most of the time one side to the battery, power out to whatever is being run, exciter wire from the acc side of the switch and a ground.
